Started the lyric last night, and finally worked the structure out today. Just guitar and voice everything doesn't have to be overproduced, right?
That county road
It don’t go nowhere
Except to a spot off in the woods
Where there’s a girl
I used to know
just some girl I used to know pretty good
CHORUS:
I was looking for something
something to believe in
but I believe she showed me one thing
that’s how to love ‘em
and leave ‘em
She held me in her arms
Real close
She held me for a time
But now she
Found herself a boy
she found a boy who she can wine and dine
Driving these
county roads
To places I been before
I drive all around
There’s one turn
I don’t take any more
Outro:
She told me
She told it to me straight
She said when I’m gone
You gonna feel the weight

Sometimes a guitar and voice is all you need! This is lovely, and given the topic and the heartfelt delivery I think anything more wouldn't be right for the song.

I think A Major is the official key of heartbreak. Like you said, everything doesn't have to be overproduced. One guitar and one voice convey bitterness, tinged with a little nostalgia or longing for the past, and plus those nicely-voiced chords just let the emotions hang in space for a moment before the next chord change. Kind of like when you linger too long on a painful thought in public and that lump starts in your throat.

For this being just voice and guitar, it feels really full. Your voice here is really strong. The lyrics bring out a really wistful "I'm thinking about something else as I'm driving down the highway" vibe to it. This is more in my genre so it's the song of yours that I've connected to the most.

Poignant writing and performance. Wouldn't add a thing - the simple arrangement makes it more personal. I get the picture of someone who doesn't go down that road, but they still pass it all the time. Love the believe in / leave 'em rhyme, and the very different senses of "believe" in the chorus. I definitely feel this one.

Simple is what this song needed. You told a clear story without getting bogged down in details. I like the line "There’s one turn/I don’t take any more". Beautiful musical and vocal delivery. Very much enjoyed this listen.

Love the delivery on "used to know .... pretty good." The sting of "showed me how to ... leave them" hits the listener, then we hear it hit the "I" and we take that in. Really effective.
As for "there's one turn I don't take any more" as for the literal road I know that feeling! and for the metaphor, what shall I say - I hope I'm maybe living something like that?
Something about the actual rhyming sound of straight/weight is so different from the rest of the song, that it pops out with magnitude even before we know you're giving it that cold ending. Wow, that last few lines is really great because of that!

so beautifully simple! my favorite kind of song - I especially like the use of the outro, a very good reminder of a fantastic song feature!!! super nice to see you here again too!!

nice vocals on this!

That’s so beautifully sad. Love the vocals, reminds me of Elliott Smith somehow, the lyrics and the simple guitar strumming.

Great acoustic sounds and playing! Wow. Really pretty song and another in past tense, which you do really well. Sad kind of, but also introspective and reflective. Well done!

Great write. The storytelling here is spot on. "One turn I don't take anymore" makes the song, for me. The outro makes the listener feel the weight, too.

Wonderful 1st person perspective that gives insight into both characters. I love your vocals on this - it feels like an honest heartfelt story. Love the guy with a guitar groove -it creates an intimacy.
@goldarrow Feb 2022
Thumbs up, love the chorus! "I believe she showed me one thing that’s how to love ‘em and leave ‘em"...... great line!!

Lovely song, Eric! The simple arrangement works well, the lyrics are also very direct and straight to the point, and there's nothing wrong with that — on the contrary, I like the story, it's honest and relatable. And your voice is lovely over the guitar, it works really well.
Really like this one!
@mikeskliar Feb 2022
wow, this is really wonderful- that casual approach sneaks up on you and the roundabout way you get to the fatal blow is really creative. That just-guitar-and vocal is the way to go on a song like this , too, I think. really nicely done- love it!
