Feb 2022 guy with a parlour guitar fingerpicking nature calls
Full disclosure. I had written these lyrics between last night and this morning. They were written in celebration of the "Caminants Lunàtics" - my local ad-hoc rambling club with whom I regularly go walking. We had a fabulous "caminata" this morning up into the hills to an old castle with a cave below it.
As I waited for the announcement of the prompt, I took the time to type up the lyrics from the notebook in which I had written them. I just finished that and went to see what the prompt was.
Imagine my surprise and pleasure when I saw "WALK". All I had to do was set the lyrics to music and "job done" - what Serendipity!
Dedicated to my rambling companions in Vilanova i la Geltrú
Intro: (Em) (D) (G)
It (C) surely won't work miracles
It's not a (G) cure for all your ills
But there's (Em) nothing fills your soul quite like
(D) Walking in the (G) Hills
We (D) get up in the morning
When (G) often it's still dark
Hear the (C) notes of the dawn (G) chorus
With the (D) exception of the lark
(Bm) Once we leave the town behind
The (C) air is fresh and clean
(Em) Those who have experienced it
Know ex(D)actly what I (G) mean
CHORUS
(D) Rambling out among the trees
Or (G) over rocky plains
You (C) get in touch with (G) nature
You're (D) out in her domains
(Bm) Something deep inside us says
That (C) we were made for this!
To get a(Em)way from streets and houses
Is (D) nothing short of (G) bliss
CHORUS
From (D) hills or up on mountains
(G) You can enjoy the view
Vast (C) vistas and hor(G)izons
Soon (D) open up for you
From (Bm) such an airy vantage point
(C) You can see for miles
And en(Em)joy the company you are with
Their (D) laughter and their (G) smiles
CHORUS

Late to the party but...
Thanks for your nice walking song. When the pandemic was good for something it was enjoying lots of walks in our region. Walks on nearly every weekend made us appreciate our home region even more.

Nice write, and what a lovely serendipity. The fingerstyle is great for this kind of "wandering storyteller" lyric.
FWIW, my ears wanted to hear an extra measure (and maybe a minor chord change?) between "walking" and "in the hills."
@billwhite51 Mar 2022
a transcendentalist ballad cloaked in traditional form, the woody guthrie of walden pond speaks!
@crisp1 Mar 2022
I'm not sure I've ever heard a musical tribute to walking, certainly not one as lovely as this, Berni. Really nice! Heartfelt words with strong imagery and I love the melody that you came up with for this. Very memorable.
@wolfkier Mar 2022
Your certainly getting the bounce and gallop of a fine walk , the story is told in sights and sounds. Well done.

Sorry to take so long to return your visit and kind words. I'm only just hitting my enourmous list that I was building while working hard to reach my goals in Feb! Hope you had a great FabFeb. Thanks again.
@audrey Feb 2022
Oh, this is lovely! You write such great vivid lyrics. Your last verse took me back to childhood when I would climb the cross on one of the mountain tops near our summer cottage in the Laurentian mountains north of Montreal. Way up on that cross I could literally see for miles and miles and feel the wind. It was wonderful. Thank you for bringing back this memory to me. Beautiful song Berni.
@cleanshoes Feb 2022
This is lovely. I'm an avid walker myself, so this is a familiar sentiment. It definitely puts me in mind of getting up early on a nice day to take a long walk! Great fingerpicking and chord progression, too!
@mariekevinkmusic Feb 2022
What a lovely ode to walking! It is really a nice 'rambling song'. it flows nicely and has a good pace to it. Nice chords progression as well, not starting on the tonic works well to raise expectations.
@kahlo2013 Feb 2022
This is a wonderful. It captures my feelings about being out in the woods and fields. So healing and important. Flows beautifully!
@musicsongwriter Feb 2022
That was good luck to write the lyrics which would suit the prompt. You still needed to come up with music and to record it. It totally counts! I just composed a piano piece which is the third if not less part of a song. I enjoyed listening to your song very much. Good imagery, lovely singing and playing.
@crutherford Feb 2022
i read the liner notes after i listened to your lovely song.
how wonderful!
i also love adventuring in the wilds so i truly appreciate the sentiment in your song.
my fav part is:
(D) Rambling out among the trees
Or (G) over rocky plains
You (C) get in touch with (G) nature
You're (D) out in her domains
(Bm) Something deep inside us says
That (C) we were made for this!
To get a(Em)way from streets and houses
Is (D) nothing short of (G) bliss
Great skirmish!
Love how serendipitous this prompt was for your lyric!
Bravo!
@arthurrossi Feb 2022
Lovely down-to-earth imagery in the lyrics and a very uplifting, serene tune, the music feels so mesmerizingly "mellow" and "warm". The chorus is very strong and catchy again as in practically all of your songs... Joyful and enchanting.
@mardeycranbleson Feb 2022
Ha what luck! I’ll accept it. Enjoyed the performance and they resolution keeps coming back to the “walking in the hills” its very satisfying . Definitely identify with this one I love getting out there also.
@axl Feb 2022
Oh how I yearn for getting away from streets and cars. I'm looking so much forward to spring and to enjoying the feeling you so masterfully evoke. Lovely picking as well.
@thedutchwidows Feb 2022
I love that serendipity! That's a cracking song - really gave me a feeling of outdoorsiness and pace. Something in the rhythm of the words and guitar had a nice momentum to it.
Your walks sound much nicer than my daily treks around my tiny town in the West Midlands!
@porrectus Feb 2022
nice sounding song. Good images nice work on recording. Great hook.
@jwhanberry Feb 2022
Serendipity is good. You sound very comfortable with the lyric, not rushed like a skirmish lyric. You communicated the pleasure the walks give you. I might have to take a walk myself. Good stuff.
@vainhirvain Feb 2022
"Something deep inside us says
That we were made for this!
To get away from streets and houses
Is nothing short of bliss" - AMEN!
@tukayandryan Feb 2022
The healing power of nature is so underestimated. Lovely lyrics and always enjoy your vocal :)
@berty38 Feb 2022
This is timeless. Your disclosure about writing this earlier than the skirmish might as well have been that you wrote this in 1940 and it was an old classic song that was an American folk standard.
Now I want to go take a nature walk.
@sunfire Feb 2022
Love it. Great sounding tune. Words, vocals and all!
@dock Feb 2022
The lyrics are delightful, the rhyming fits easily into the flow of the meaning. Nice little melody as well.
@keithcuts Feb 2022
alright Bernie Ill let it slide this time lololol
aye you know i agree with that chorus!
this song is awesome! the lyrics i mean and instrunment
Hey i want to walk in those hills!
excellent song its fun and visual and some good knowledge here!
also appreciate the melody stretch on the last line
@unknownbecky Feb 2022
Wow! What an amazing coincidence. It was meant to be. This song does have a classic feel, almost inevitable, like it always existed. Also meant to be!
@ajna1960 Feb 2022
Well now I want to go walking tomorrow ! Not sure about hills as I suspect my arthritis would have something to say about that, but maybe on the nearby beach :)
Your lyrical descriptions of rambling in the hills with friends are really clear and wonderful sounding. And the deceptively simple guitar picking the vocal floats along on, is just sublime.
@vegansongs Feb 2022
Ok..I have to sing the harmony...Eugene Levy and Catherine Ohara style? If I could get a mobile mic so I could record it while walking...This is a great song.
@tunecat Feb 2022
Perfect ramblers song! I totally get this. I walked the pennine way this summer. There’s nothing to say other than you nailed it!
