I do lyrical themes every year and this year’s theme is the previous year - same theme as last year…since we seem to be on repeat.
This one’s vaguely about the waffling of COVID restrictions in the public sphere. I wasn’t even sure if I was going to use this generic blues riff idea and then it kinda flowered and now this little absurdity will be the opening track on my 2022 FAWM album/playlist.
She will greet ya
Hidden teeth ya
Hang your jacket at the back of the room
Or she’ll block ya
Nix o’clock ya
I’m on my way but the cab got a flat on the road
[Chorus tyoe thing]
They used to tell me no
But now they let me go
Doctor on the telly says you just never know
Ages passing by
Sages asking why
Everybody’s gonna get gone if we’re gunning to go
[Chorus]
You say stop
I say go
You say bye
But no, no, no, hello
If your time’s up
Mark your crimes up
Join the suspects in an orderly line
One way mirror
Wait to hear her
Gimme amnesty as an outro hippie folk song
Yeah

Great fun. Turning the vocal performance up to eleven is the perfect approach to this. I have no idea why, but this immediately made me think of the sort of songs they used to drop into episodes of Scooby Doo back in the day. Maybe it's that faint spooky theremin lurking at the back. Odd context, for sure—but it works, right?
