Feb 2022 mandolin-one-take
No challenge, just a Family Day holiday here today. Time to bake a pie.
I baked an apple pie
To share with my honey
But when it was finished
one half looked really funny
So I cut it in two
and chose the perfect slice
gave the other piece away
And I lost paradise
Well,F I picked the apples,
and G I cut them up
I made the crust
Wasn't that enough?
I worked very hard
to make that pie
Who would've thought
He'd say goodbye?
Well it wasnt my fault
The oven overheated
One side was burnt
And he felt cheated
When something goes wrong,
Who takes the blame?
Surely one person
shouldn’t have that claim
Well, I picked the apples,
and I cut them up
I made the crust
I guess it wasnt enough
I worked very hard
to make that pie
Who would've thought
He'd say goodbye?.
I know there are times
I am not responsible
But once in awhile,
I have to be accountable
The apples were not perfect
He could have helped me pick them
The oven dials needed adjusting
Why didn't he just fix them?
people are getting better and better
at blaming others when things go wrong
Kinda like Adam and Eve
In the garden when they still belonged
Well,you know, Adam blamed Eve,
Eve blamed the serpent,
and the serpent stood up and said.
"What, not me. You're out of luck"
Seems everybody passes the buck

I like the chiming mando sound - nice strumming! And I like the melodic humor in your storytelling voice. In addition to being a charming slice-of-life song, this could also be a great full-band country song!
@timfatchen Mar 2022
Apple pie. Eve-efforts notwithstanding, I wouldn't let him back again!
@leepat Mar 2022
yeah, easier to blame one another than do the work.
great metaphor and it did take a turn at the end with Adam and Eve (the bridge) which became a new (unfinished) idea.
at least you got the good slice :)

This was definitely a journey. I found I had to recalibrate my thinking several times over the course of the piece. It's a cute little allegory for the rather big, rather serious problem of people, couples especially, blaming each other and not having shared accountability, or the humility to admit they were wrong. Third to last verse was getting uncomfortably close to the way my arguments with my spouse tend to turn out. Quite cool also to leave us with the deep-seated mythological roots of the problem.

„I worked very hard to make that pie, who would‘ve thought he said goodbye“ - someone busting up a relationship over a pie was not worth all that work, :D Anyway, your mandolin sounds great. I also liked the Adam and Eve references. You made the point about blaming loud and clear. Humorous as well!
@gm7 Mar 2022
Funny! Love the Adam and Eve reference... apples were a problem there also! Love that smooth mandolin playing I think this has inspired me to tune mine. Nice job.

I'm happy that I ate some apple pie before listening to this song cause this makes me cheerful and hungry. Fun how something nice like an apple pie could end up in a fight and fingerpointing. Clever write #tit4tat
@tjeff Mar 2022
Well darn him for leavin'! A super-creative and funny story, and I love the way you sing your stories. I especially like the "apples were not perfect" verse. The bridge is really nice too, kind of sums up what your story is about.
@darcistrutt Mar 2022
Very cute delivery! I hear a smile in your voice.

I shouldn't have listened to this before lunch :D Nice bit of storytelling here. A thought provoking allegory.
@kenmattsson Feb 2022
Very fun here Linda. Classic with you singing and mandolining. I like how you're almost playing a character here.
@seppo Feb 2022
That's how it goes when you do it all but still for somebody it just ain't enough.
Been there done that :)
Like your way to tell a story.

This is great. It almost reminds me of something that would have been on a fallout soundtrack. Very whimsical and fun. #tit4tat1
@katestantonsings Feb 2022
Haha, I didn't expect the Adam and Eve twist at the end! You are a clever songwriter, Linda. I enjoy the mandolin. #Tit4Tat

This is so much fun. A great listen. I love your sense of humour. Really like your vocal. Fab one take! Your mandolin playing is awesome as always.

This was fun, and what a left turn! I expected the other shoe to drop at some point, I just didn't expect a rant, but then what do you expect when a guy leaves you over a pie? Apart from the lyric, I also particularly like how the ends of certain lines are drawn out so they don't land too neatly.. not only does it keep the song from feeling too tidy, it introduces an additional tension/resolution that's so important in keeping songs interesting. Nice lighthearted tune that has excellent nuts and bolts too!
@danvaillancourt Feb 2022
Super fun listen. Great one take and love the story and all the twists in the story/metaphor. Laughed at many of the lines throughout. Loved the ending stanza to tie it all together.
@jayjay Feb 2022
Clever lyrics and beautifully set to music. Really liked this #tit4tat
@wacha Feb 2022
Oh, this song is so much more than about an apple pie and I LOVE it! The progression from pie to the balance of responsibilities in a relationship all the way back to Adam and Eve is some great and clever songwriting, well done.
@williamjames Feb 2022
Such a nuanced song about an apple pie :) Great job on the one take. I really liked the little spoken word bits between singing. Great job playing the mandolin, sounded great!
@papaooo Feb 2022
Nice job on a one-take! I like the setup, very au courant.
