@paulh1237 - I sent @owl what was effectively a basic chord progression with some bass/drums added, and she only went and made it into a lovely song. Thank you! Also, I think this the first time I have ever ticked off a weekly challenge (admittedly, many weeks too late, but still!)
@owl - I started this out as kind of a COVID lament song about being isolated at home, and then started thinking about how much it sounded like a song about being a brain floating in a jar. So... I guess it could be either. I upgraded my Arturia Analog Lab installation recently and it nuked all the synths I was used to using, so I spent too long trying to find one that sounded right. This one is a bit more cosmic than what I was looking for but I thought it sounded cool when I tried it out so I went with it!
It seems silly, doesn't it now
The way we used to bend and move our bodies
Time got the best of us
What can we do now
But keep on going?
The river's a trickle now
But it keeps on flowing
It seems silly, doesn't it now
The way the sky outside went on forever
A quaint idea
Like stormy weather
Sometimes I dream about the way we used to dance
Foolish and ugly and utterly free
Our days are full and limitless
Bathed in the digital light, we have nothing to fear
Everything we could possibly want is here

Ooh, this is a bit fruity in places isn't it? I particularly like those jazzy verses. I like how the lyrics (to me anyway) are a little ambiguous and leave space for you to think on them. That old school synth patch with the portamento is super cool too.

This is great, really loved the synths cutting through the guitars. The vocals are lovely and tell your story really well. Nice one.
@frenchcricket Feb 2022
Some truly excellent cop chords and I really like the way it transitions seamlessly into something less jazzy for the chorus. I thought it was going to be like Tame Impala at the start but it was actually really hard to classify it in one genre or style. The vocals are really nice on this, and it was a lovely, albeit pleasingly strange, little meditation. Lyrically, the last verse/stanza is my favourite.

Lo Fi, splash cymbal, under stated vocal, like this a lot :)
oh yeah brain is a body part!
@rayboneor Feb 2022
I love the jazzy chords, and the way the bass and synths move together at times. There are lots of different moods packed into this little song. There are moments that hit me right in the heart, moments where the words and music really resonated with me. I really loved those lines about the way you used to dance, foolish and ugly and utterly free. And then that led me to look differently at the opening lines about how silly it seems, the way you moved your bodies. Time does indeed get the best of us. But I imagine even very old people still do some version of that dance, foolish ugly and free.

This feels pleasantly spacey and psychedelic. How is there only one song tagged #braininajar ??
@djevans53 Feb 2022
Like all the reflections and contemplations in the lyrics. The melody is nice, smooth and questioning. Nice collab.
@sheslin Feb 2022
I am here for the title :D Oh these sweet light vocals are such a nice contrast to the heavier instrumental track - they really cut through the mix. It is a very cool song and a wonderful collab!
@fuzzy Feb 2022
Great title.
Really lovely guitar work here.
And of course, @owl always makes everything awesome.
Excellent little synth(?) accents there.
So bendy.
Such a great collab.
@funnypunkband Feb 2022
This turned out really great! I love the instrumentation -- sounds like Bosa Nova via Futurama. And the vocals sound like they were written just for the song. Awesome!
@richaaaay Feb 2022
That first chord just roped me in. And that's a nice bass groove. I relate to this too much. Beautiful vocal phrasing. I so love the little vocal inflections, which are just delightful.
@jcameron Feb 2022
I had to click, given the title and given that I chose "brain" for the body parts challenge as well. A beautiful song indeed, and an intriguing concept. The voice is lovely and you have nothing to be ashamed of in that accompaniment :)
@guatecoop Feb 2022
I completely agree with Ad--the intro could have led into a number of different styles. This just starts out smooth and cruises along nicely. The melody is great, as are the lyrics. The shift in mood between the verse and chorus really works, which isn't often the case, because somehow it's a convincing change in the message or story, rather than two parts that just don't really go together. Really well done!
@billwhite51 Feb 2022
almost a samba. it begins as one, then goes into a straight rock beat while owl maintains a light, almost brazilian flavor.
@headfirstonly Feb 2022
Always fun to listen to a simulation argument song! The theory is slightly more plausible than Boltzmann brains, but only because it's not quite as silly...
+1 on the "you got away with it" but some of those guitar parts really do stray well away from the chromatic scale...
@adforperu Feb 2022
Such an intriguing intro, really couldn't tell what was coming... trip-hop? Cosmic jazz? Turns out neither, it takes us on a real cool journey. I think you just about get away with it, but tune damn guitar, Paul!
@vomvorton Feb 2022
Lovely song, the jazzy* guitar, spacy synth and melodic bassline make the perfect bed for this thoughtful and evocative lyric. The melody is so lovely and wistful.
* perhaps too jazzy? let's crowdfund Paul a guitar tuner ;)
