I might be proudest of this song ... cut (amazingly) in one take. And it's mostly sung on key, too. And that's my brother Dean in the photo, but don't tell him. And I seem to have reached fourteen, but I'm not stopping ....
SCRATCH
I know a thing or two that is almost true …
there’s no black and white, only shades of grey
Tomorrow belongs to you and me, and it might
if we make it through today.
I’ve waited too long for the real thing.
Tonight I’ll settle for a substitute.
Most of the time I wear my heart on my sleeve.
Tonight it doesn’t match my suit.
I most usually drink alone.
I don’t talk to strangers much.
Don’t know the rules of the game anymore.
I’ve been kind of out of touch.
Do you mind if I sit with you?
You can drop your guard and your mask.
I’m not the one you’re looking for.
I don’t even have to ask.
I would whistle down the stars
and shoot the light out from the sun
I would fix the world at large
and undo the damage done.
I would trump the saints at cards,
until the game is finally won.
and I would let your dark horses run
I have tried to give my heart away before,
but I always get it back.
I’ve got to rethink my strategy.
Better devise another plan of attack.
I wonder if you’re just like me.
If we can find some common ground.
No skeletons in my closets now.
I hid them all at the lost and found.
+++ instrumental break
I would bang a different drum
and I would march in my own parade
Just tell me why we must be sorry
for choices we have made
For the sins that I commit,
I beg you kindly to forgive.
As long as I might choose to live.
When the need and circumstance collide,
it’s like a record needle jumps on a scratch.
Your head says “wait” but your heart says “why?”
Like paper in fire. You got a match?
I’ll be damned if I know
why we can’t step over the line.
I’ll be your forever man tonight
and tomorrow too, and you can be mine.

That heart on sleeve/doesn't match my suit line is so good. Actually, there are so many great lines here. You're forever man tonight...bam! Anyway, there's something ultimately hopeful here, both in the lyric and the music, despite all the currents of sadness. Really nice

Great song. The lyrics are heartfelt and sincere with many a great line. The music matches them perfectly, having a kind of confessional touch. I enjoyed this very much.
