Feb 2022 post-rock
@elesimo: my friend @chrisrauh sent me a recording of him playing his shakuhachi (Japanese flute) for a collab. I challenged myself to write a song without touching the flute, keeping its tempo, pitch, and arrangement. I created a chord progression on the guitar, added bass, drums, shakers, and finally vocals.
@chrisrauh:
One day a woman
Dressed in gold
Laid my fortune bare to me
She said:
Here’s your past
Here’s your present
And here’s your future
Do you want to know
The things you’re
Not supposed to know?
She said:
Some things are better left undone
Some stones are better left unturned
Some rivers should not be crossed
But some bridges should be burned
Don’t look away from the sun
Don’t run away from what hurts you
Hear the wind when it calls your name
It brings you home
And she told me more:
Where you’re going
No one has gone
You’re going on your own
Trace a path from here to there
It will take you anywhere
But you’re going alone
Do you want to know
The things that will
Set you free?
Some things are better left undone
Some stones are better left unturned
Some rivers should not be crossed
But some bridges should be burned
Don’t look away from the sun
Don’t run away from what hurts you
Hear the wind when it calls your name
It brings you home
It brings you home
Do you want to know
The things that you’re
Not supposed to know?
Do you want to know
The things that you’re
Not supposed to know?

I'm biased of course but quite the achievement matching the flute track - specially since I am sure that original flute track is in and out of tempo. :-)

This is great. I love the idea of writing a whole world for that flute to live. Maybe Jethro Tull can play this on their tour. Great collaboration.
I'm still pondering the answer to the question...Feels like what the serpent might have asked Eve in the garden...

I love the sound of shakuhachi! And it's such a pleasure to listen to it in a rock song. Didn't hear that before and it works so well. The lyrics are deep and insightful.

Nice job writing a song around the flute, that sounds challenging. as it is the flute adds a really cool unexpected texture here. Love that refrain of do you want to know the things you're not supposed to know.

Hey- these lyrics are killer and love that flute- Great collaboration!

Clean and crispy guitar? Check, Cool (fretless?) bassline? Check. Interesting flute? Check. Dramatic pauses and excellent dynamics? Check. Deep lyrics? Check. Pretty much all I want from a post-rock song!

Compelling questions. I especially like the vocal on this one!

Great start off point to this song, and I love all the things you added to it. Really like the story too!

Super vibe and the flute riffs are so amazing. Well done collaboration.

What a great starting point for a song!I really like the way the other instruments you added complement the flute. The lyrics are also beautifully mysterious; I love "But some bridges should be burned...."
