I guess it's good that the fourteenth thing I've put up is the result of a skirmish, as these have been my favourite things this month. I wish this was better though; by the time I suspected it might be pretty crap, it was too late, so I had to commit!
Written and recorded in exactly one hour for the skirmish prompt "Mad", done on a four-track again with all that that entails in terms of getting it into a computer.
No idea what it's about; it was supposed to be about differing perceptions and how one person's normal is another's eccentric. But I got lost somewhere. No idea where Sting came from. I mean, he's from Newcastle, obviously, just not sure what he's doing here.
I'd feel more confident about the future, if I had the skills to breathe underwater, to write my name in invisible ink, or draw perfect circles despite what people think.
Flying kites high above the houses, without a thought for electrical pulses; I missed the class where we learnt about this and I don't see the point in half-arsing full-on risk.
Some people say my behaviour is mad; I prefer myself to think of it as eccentrically glad.
Painting blue tres on broken down fences, offending dogs with my whistled offences. I knew the point I arrived in town, Sting was always lost and near the ground.
Shaking shitty sticks to push clouds away, I pray for rain on a glorious day. I wish the weather was as constant as I, if I flap my arms, I believe I can fly.
Some people say my behaviour is mad; I prefer myself to think of it as eccentrically glad.
The only time I know I'm wrong is when the whistle is wet and the day is long. The accusations ring hollow in me, I'm as barking mad as a floating willow tree.
Some people say my behaviour is mad; I prefer myself to think that I'm eccentrically glad.

Stream of consciousness lyrics are great fun, particularly when even the writer doesn't know what they're about. So much to savour throughout this (and why shouldn't Sting turn up, I say) but "eccentrically glad" is a particularly fine invention. Being happy about something these days feels like it's a revolutionary act.

Sting came from Newcastle

14 well done :)
Good uppy way to get there too :)
@porrectus Feb 2022
Thats fantastic, I really like the panning of the two guitar parts. I nice drum work. Great sounding song. Well done.
@taracraig Feb 2022
Awesome vibe and super fun lyrical take in the prompt. Super impressed by what you were able to produce in 60 minutes with a 4 track, wow!
@vomvorton Feb 2022
Your four-track recordings are sounding really good - that drum machine sounds punchy as hell! The offbeat groove here is really nice and the echoey vocal gives it a dubby feel. Impressed with the lyrics you get going in a short timeframe as well, although having just finished watching Only Murders in the Building, I'm a bit sick of Sting randomly turning up in things.
@ayehahmur Feb 2022
Yeah, that off-beat groove is really cool. Love the fuzz on the guitar stabs and motion of that excellent bassline. And I really like the humour in the lyrics too.
Skirmishes are great because they force you to complete a thing, but they can sound a bit unfinished too (even more than normal FAWM songs). That's just the nature of them. Come back to this one later.
@jwhanberry Feb 2022
Great groove here; wide open and funky as hell. The lyric is puzzling but that's ok. Good skirmish.
@tjeff Feb 2022
Love the reggae-ish groove! Instrumentation sounds great and the reverb/delay on the vocal is very effective. I really like that guitar riff in the middle! Creative take lyrically on the prompt.
@artie Feb 2022
Sounds pretty not crap to me! ...though I usually end up feeling that way too partway through a skirmish lol. Really dig the feel you created with the laid back beat, the upstroke guitar chords, and distinctive verb on the vocals. Great job on this!
@sheslin Feb 2022
Love the guitar on the 2 and the 4, and all the other cool things you do with it. You have a really cool vibe going on instrumentally and with the reverb on your vocals. Love how you drop the instrumentals down here and there. Really cool take on the prompt and very clever lyrics.
@davidtaro Feb 2022
It’s got a slightly mad Ian Dury vibe! Love all that delay on the vocal, and the stabs of distorted, trashy guitar. ‘I missed the class where we learnt about this’ is a brilliant line. And you did all this in a skirmish…. fabulous stuff!
@kahlo2013 Feb 2022
Yeah! Great groove and energy! Love those guitar stabs. I like the re-framing! Perfect!
@keithcuts Feb 2022
Th liner notes had me lol “just had to commit” I get it
Cool fun rock reggae vibe to my ears
Understated lyrical delivery adds interest ! Nice
@berty38 Feb 2022
I love how the song feels like it's constantly at the edge of going completely off the rails.
@owl Feb 2022
Congrats on the win! This is great fun with the skanky rhythm and kind of psychedelic feel of the tone and lyrics. Love the lyrics in the first two verses in particular.
@sunfire Feb 2022
Brilliant!!! What a lyric, what a title and great sounding tune!
You rock! So, many good lines and so original too. Love it.
@tukayandryan Feb 2022
Great ska groove. Double vocal works really well. 'Eccentrically glad. ' Love it! Head bobbing as we speak!! Brilliant skirmish!
@mariekevinkmusic Feb 2022
I'd love to write a song and say: no idea what it is about. Something free and liberating about that. I really like what you've done with it.
@andygriff Feb 2022
This is a fantastic effort. Loving the ska vibe and crazy vocals. You say you got a bit lost, well tbh to me that kind of suits the song!
@tunecat Feb 2022
Drums sounding great. Then the guitar s as of bass also. Vocals- like the double vocal - and like getting a sense of personality. Guitars grooving like crazy. ska-tastic
@cindyrella Feb 2022
Wow, this rhythm is beyond cool! Such energy and a great skirmish!
@tcelliott Feb 2022
Nice guitar stabs. And that rhythm track is just a hair discombobulated, too. All in a good way. Hard to sit still listening to this.
@ajna1960 Feb 2022
"eccentrically glad" I'd like to think this is me too ! It's a wonderful lyric phrase.
Great song, great performance and definitely wonderful for a skirmish !!
@svwulfe Feb 2022
That drum beat hugs this all together in a lovely bubble. And the line: "Shaking shitty sticks to push the clouds away, I pray for rain on a glorious day." and "I'm as barking mad as a floating willow tree." -- I love these lyrics. This is definitely way better than crap! :)
@sw1n3flu Feb 2022
fuzzy ska/reggae skirmish? uh yeas please!
The dreamlike delivery of the lyrics is cool ... like it's all happening inside the narrator's head!
@carleybaer Feb 2022
I like this a lot. I'm bopping in my chair :D Production is on point! Nice skirmishing
@coolparadiso Feb 2022
congrats on your 14 and a nice one to make it! tap tap reggae man. Love the lyric oh eccentricity a rarely used word these days! reality out weirds everything i guess
@sheilerk Feb 2022
I love the all of the mad images and the rhythm of this. I think it represents the prompt really well. And, it's a lot of fun to listen to!!
