Another response to a song challenge prompt - “I’ve been holding myself back all this time”
When I was a child
My momma told me
Nothing is free
It all costs money
So save your pennies
In the bank
One day when you’re rich
It’ll be me you thank
I never bought treats
I didn’t want flowers
I used all my sense
To save every dollar
But I dreamt of a dress
When my head hit the pillow
It shone like a star
From a downtown window
Some day
Some day
Growing up in this town
People told me
Your future’s secure
If you have property
So save your pennies
In a bank
But hurry up dear
Those rates won’t tank
So I didn’t travel
To London or Agra
I used all my sense
To save every dollar
But I dreamt of roaming far
When my head hit the pillow
A new country, new town
Filling my tomorrow
Some day
Some day
All that good advice kept me
Safe and tied
I’ve been holding myself back
All this time
Now here I am on
The bad side of fifty
What can I show
From being so thrifty
I saved all my pennies
In the bank
When they fell in heap
My super was shanked
All of those things
I could have savoured
The memories to warm me
That never got made
Still I dream of a dress
And a new tomorrow
Where I’ll race out the door
When I leave my pillow
Some day
Some day

The answer was to be born into wealth, but then I'd have had to give it all away because of the injustice. Great song. *waves from the bad side of 60* :)

I love the picking pattern on the guitar. This is a great song about the conflict and power of money, the independence and the problems it offers. Our parents so inform our attitudes towards it, for good or bad. I love this line - Now here I am on The bad side of fifty. Well done!
