Feb 2022 rock alternative-rock collab indie raven
DREAMSCUBA - I was working on a rock/alternate/punk idea about the many crows that are in the CBD area of Singapore. I am often out and about and I see these birds. I used to be confused as to whether they were crows or ravens. The name and idea came from there - "The Raven". I passed the instrumental track and the concept to @spazsquatch and he ran with the idea from there. He also reworked some sections with some rearrangements adding lyrics and vocals.
@spazsquatch this was a lot of fun for sure and I love what you have done with this song. Thank you.
SPAZSQUATCH: @dreamscuba mentioned not knowing the difference between ravens and crows, and I didn't either, that sent me looking up the characteristics of each, and at some point stumbled upon a relevant Aesop Tale:
"A crow was jealous of the Raven, because he was considered a bird of good omen and always attracted the attention of men, who noted by his flight the good or evil course of future events. Seeing some travelers approaching, the Crow flew up into a tree, and perching herself on one of the branches, cawed as loudly as she could. The travelers turned towards the sound and wondered what it foreboded, when one of them said to his companion, “Let us proceed on our journey, my friend, for it is only the caw of a crow, and her cry, you know, is no omen.”"

I liked this concept of a false prophet and I started to play with the phrasing of a crow pretending to be raven. Eventually I ended up with the musical phrasing of "caw of the crow pretending to be the raven". Once I settled settled on that, it all started to flow.
It was a fun collab and I love how the final turned out. It really feels epic to my ears.
The Raven
[VERSE]
You fit the part.
There’s no denying.
You know that
you play the role so very well.
At a casual glance.
There are few who could tell
[VERSE]
Got the look down
Practiced rhetoric
A message
Lifted from the words of others
Who stood behind them
And didn’t use them as cover
[PRE]
But I see though the disguise
Nevermore to fall for the lies
[CHORUS]
You say you herald the truth
But you aim to deceive
You preach your word as omen
For all to believe
It’s just the the caw of the crow pretending to be the raven
[VERSE]
A call for bloodshed
While perched above them
A coward
Who’s every word is just a grift
Take what you’re after
While sowing division and rift
[PRE]
I see though the disguise
Nevermore to fall for the lies
[CHORUS]
You say you herald the truth
But you aim to deceive
You preach your word as omen
For all to believe
It’s just the the caw of the crow pretending to be the raven
[BRIDGE]
The jealous crow wanted to have the same respect man granted the raven.
Perched on the highest branch she could find, she pantomimed it’s kraa as loudly as she could.
Some travellerss, paused upon hearing the sound, wondering what it foreboded.
Until one companion spotted the bird.
“It is only the caw of a crow, and her cry you know is no omen”
[SOLO]
[OUTRO]
You say you herald the truth
But you aim to deceive
You preach your word as omen
For all to believe
It’s just the the caw of the crow pretending to be the raven

This is a classic 70s/80s rock song - I like the punched guitar hits in the verse which gives it its structure - the breakdown before the solo is a cool section of the song. It’s a well developed well produced song - nice job good collab

Great rock song, especially the vocal delivery. Seems applicable to current events as well.

Well crows and raven are smart. This is slick song, great vocals and guitar work..so you don't have to be smart to know that. Those drum are programed .. my god they are so good. this is a classic sound that brings me back a few years to beer & bars . Great collab.

I always thought a crow was just a bigger raven. Now I know more, thanks! @spazsquatch vocals work so well with @dreamscuba sound of the guitars. And the drum programming is so damn good. This is definately a keeper. Great one.

Someone else mentioned the awesome drums - those were very cool. The vocal delivery and the rest of the production is on point too. I'm so impressed with what people are able to put together this month.

I'm glad I found this. The liner notes had me intrigued. The music kept me interested. Nice vocal delivery! Really enjoyed the drums and guitar work. “It is only the caw of a crow, and her cry you know is no omen” Love this lyric.
Crows are incredibly intelligent--love watching them around here.

That bass is really going for it and I really like the guitar tone
This is a powerful sound with an absorbing lyric and an excellent vocal.
The crow/raven debate is even more confusing when you add in rooks which I suspect is probably what we have in my locality.
Loved the song.
