Feb 2022 new-wave synth alternative-rock
This originally started as a song called "Meet Me in Multipurpose Room 3" that would have played over the credits an early/mid-aughts Ryan Reynolds college comedy (based on a dream), but that didn't quite pan out. Then my 6-year old daughter said I should write a song called "So Much Love" - i doubt this is what she had in mind, but I think it works better. At any rate, I had fun playing with synths on this one - thanks, TyrellN6!
Never ending bullshit
Heap it up higher and higher
Alternative truths
To make the honest man a liar
More disinformation
Adding fuel to the fire
Mobs are at the gate
Barbarians are at the door
Foaming at the mouth to tear down
All that we’ve worked for
Standing not for anything
Obstruction and uproar
So once again, it’s come to this
Teeter on the edge of the abyss
Maybe it’s not too late for us to pull it back
Before the blackness… overtakes it all
There’s only so much love
Oh can it be enough
To put an end to hate
And keep the light from being snuffed
There’s only so much love
When push comes to shove
Can it bear the weight?
I pray to God that it will be enough
Didn’t learn the lesson last time
So here we go again
We underestimated
The stupidity of men
The golden lure of ignorance
Is not an if but when
Are we doomed to destruction’s sweet allure
Or can our flawed foundations endure
Can we come together, standing back to back
Before the blackness… overtakes it all
There’s only so much love
Oh can it be enough
To put an end to hate
And keep the light from being snuffed
There’s only so much love
When push comes to shove
Can it bear the weight?
I pray to God that it will be enough
There’s only so much love
Oh can it be enough
To take away the pain
Before we are become undone
There’s only so much love
When push comes to shove
Can it take the strain?
I pray to God that it will be enough

This has a cool pre-apocalyptic feel, full of portent and intimations of doom. The way it turned out, I can envision this playing over the closing credits not of a Ryan Reynolds comedy, but of a thriller where the hero was racing to save the world from a wholly man-made threat ... and the movie ends on an ambiguous note as to whether they succeeded or not. Very evocative song, and your vocals have just the right touch of menace and unease to reinforce the uneasy vibe.

Man, that beginning riff before the lyrics start is catchy! The whole thing sounds like something I would have listened to on repeat in early college.

I think you articulated what I wanted to say with my punk song much better! Seems like there's a few apocalyptic songs like this in 2022 for some strange reason..
I really like this, it's a cool little song, like the arrangements, the vocals and the lyrics.

Very cool. I was almost half expecting to hear your daughter come as a coda singing so much love a capella. Really, very nice job!
