Rachel says:
I related very much to the sense of loss in this song, and I loved Liz's use of nature to illustrate the way that loss can be felt.
The music had to be sad, but sweet for this song. Pretty much the first thing that came to me was that it needed a waltz tempo. After that it was finding where the song wanted to sit in my voice and what chords would support that.
I had fun with the effects and backing vocals on this, I hope they add to the song.
Liz says: I’m grateful that Rachel wanted to put this to music. Her piano ballad waltz and lovely vocals are perfect. I really love the emotion she brought to the song, especially as it builds at the bridge. In all honesty, with my dyslexia, I made an error in the lyric but it still works… I wrote in the chorus “talking on the trials of our life” I meant to write “talking on the trails of our life …” as the verses were about walking along different trails … oh well, at least Rachel was wise enough to change the “on” to “about” so at least “talking about trials of… “ is grammatically correct!
Echos of What Ifs
V1
walking among
the white pine
reminds me
about you
and those sweet
afternoons
when we were
together
PC
holding hands
walking
dreaming and
talking
on the trials
of our life
C
I hear your voice
in the branches
of the trees
I see your face
in the shadows
of the cliffs
and I hear echos
of what ifs…
echos of what ifs…
V2
walking along
the red cliffs
reminds me of
simpler times
when love was
so sublime
and we believed
forever
PC
holding hands
walking
dreaming and
talking
on the trials
of our life
C
I hear your voice
in the branches
of the trees
I see your face
in the shadows
of the cliffs
and I hear echos
of what ifs…
echos of what ifs…
B
what if I had come home
and seen your note?
what if I had been there
when you needed me most?
C
I hear your voice
in the branches
of the trees
I see your face
in the shadows
of the cliffs
and I hear echos
of what ifs…
echos of what ifs…

Lovely piano. Your vocal carries the lyric so beautifully. The doubling is very effective.
I can see why you were drawn to this lyric, it's a good one. I agree the use of nature is very effective. The imagery is excellent, draws me into the feeling and reinforces what I'm hearing in the vocal and piano. I can hear the lonely, the yearning.
