Verse
On a warm summer's night
In the deep of the glen
You can feel the moss grow
See the song of a wren
Verse
You can hear the brook sigh
To the song of a sprite
All the words of her woe
All the pain as she cries
Chorus
My lover my love for who I lament
Who took you from me ?
Who gave you your death ?
My lover my love who couldn't defend
From the dreaded banshee
From the devil's last breath
Verse
As the sun reaches downward
To the damp soggy bank
The sprite in her sorrow
Of the water she drinks
Chorus
My lover my love for who I lament
Who took you from me ?
Who gave you your death ?
My lover my love who couldn't defend
From the dreaded banshee
From the devil's last breath
Verse
It cools and it chills her
As she thinks of her love
Of the dancing together
Of the memories touched
Chorus
My lover my love for who I lament
Who took you from me ?
Who gave you your death ?
My lover my love who couldn't defend
From the dreaded banshee
From the devil's last breath
Verse
You can hear the brook sigh
To the song of a sprite
All the words of her woe
All the pain as she cries

Vivid visual imagery. Makes me thirsty! Bittersweet tale...
@tiller2 Feb 2022
A picturesque, sad tale, well written. Btw, an alternative to "defend" is "forfend" (keep away), which doesn't need to be followed by "from," but perhaps it's too archaic! Thanks for hosting; it was an inspiring prompt.
@bandybum Feb 2022
Another fab lyric! Just love the imagery of those verse lines :)
@vainhirvain Feb 2022
Mmmm tasty! The first verse gives a hint of the time window - I reckon as a human you'd need to spend quite a while in the glen to feel the moss grow.. To me, the song of the elf in this poem is like she's singing the everlastin death of all that's near and dear, and there is no one to blame.. death is indeed a mystery. Or, is it the writer who is mourning, and just hears and sees her own feelings in the surrounding nature? Maybe! Beautiful lyrics with many levels!

@chipwithrow Feb 2022
A classic, timeless feel to this one. I love the near-rhymes - something I'd like to try more of.
@tuneslayer Feb 2022

@porrectus Feb 2022
Nice work, really great vivid lyrics. Big fan of the chorus's rhythm and rhyme. Well done.
@cindyrella Feb 2022
Oh I love the lyrics! So traditional and that chorus! Wonderful!
@berni1954 Feb 2022
Yes, that's definitely in the spirit of the tradition. There are countless songs addressed to dead lovers.
@tcelliott Feb 2022
Great chorus. This is an excellent write.
@hurongrand Feb 2022
Ooh, nice lyrics! I love all the vivid nature imagery.
@chickenjail Feb 2022
You paint a picture of the environment. I can really picture it. I'm also somewhat relieved I'm not the only one whose mind immediately went to "dead lover" from this prompt!
@keithcuts Feb 2022
