We had a walk around town today and saw quite a few of the trees taken down by last night's storm. Scary stuff!
Damages running to millions
Some have had a lucky escape
Cars with roofs beyond repair
Devastation all around
Trees which have stood for centuries
Ripped up clean by the roots
Falling to the choppy canal
Forces almost supernatural
Trains have been cancelled
And transport is stuck
Goods which were meant for the shelves
Power is out and the rain has returned
But the warning has dropped from red down to yellow
The weather man says there’s less cause for concern
We name the storms after boys and girls
As if they have human personas
As if makes them seem better

Love the obsevation of consequences in this. That continued rhyme across verses in canal / supernatural / cancelled is rather nifty. I'm still not convinced we need to anthropomorphise storms like this, though. It smacks of insecurity; "The Americans give their hurricanes names, why can't we have storms with names too?"

I wanted to write a song about the storm (perhaps not the same one). You beat me to it. There's something nicely wistful and elegaic about this.
