This is a song about gender identity. I was having issues with my Mac so I kept it simple. Just my guitar and a drum track
They were 14,
Ashamed of their own skin,
All daydreams,
Were seeing who they were within,
The pronouns they were labeled with,
Never seemed to fit,
And the face they wore to appease the world
Was counterfeit.
They know their role,
They play it well,
Mask in place,
No one can tell,
That beneath the mask,
The facade is cracked,
Inside they just want their life back,
When they were younger,
Playing dress up,
No one cared what way they had their hair up,
When they wore their father’s shirt and mother’s shoes,
Their family would smile and let them choose,
But as they aged, pretend melted away,
They were taught how to dress and what to say,
And all the toys were put away,
Every person has a true face,
Hidden beneath the mask,
Sometimes the person you see,
And the person they are,
May not match,
Sometimes the mask grows old,
And sinks its vines deeper in
Until even the wearer doesn’t recognize
The person deep within,
But we can’t let the mask win,
Living truth cannot be a sin,

Being non-binary this is so emotional to listen to and read. I haven't journeyed into discussing gender through music, but you're kinda inspiring me to explore myself a little more. Thanks so much for baring your soul through this song, and for making our voice that much more seen. :)

I have to admit that as a cisgendered he/him, I rely a lot like on songs like this to see how non-binary people see the world. And the simple drum track and guitar is perfect for a song like this. Anything much more complicated would take away from the message.
