Not my first stone age poem – and maybe not my last. This is about the idea, the Neanderthals could have been the more peaceful species (their brains were bigger and heavier than ours, for example) and our prehistoric ancestors, the early Homo sapiens, pushed them aside and replaced them. For sure – as we nowadays guess step by step - the Neanderthals were not half as primitive and philistine as we first thought they were. (They invented, for example, how to gain glue – in a complicated procedure from the birch tree.)
I programmed the beat, played guitars and keys and added the lead vocals at last. Andrea conducted the musically emergence, played bass and sang the wordless part. The lyrics' theme was her idea, also - I only conceived the poem. ;-) I'm not that happy with my singing – still didn't find the best melody by first take (which is what you get here)... I hope it's alright as a sketch.

I really love the way we develop songs - from the idea to the end. Duke's lyrics are brillant, and the way he sang was totally the direction I dreamt of.

NEANDERTALERSORGEN

=====================ENGLISH
A NEANDERTHAL'S SORROWS
The ancestor‘s staff has fallen
out of my hands
When I was whispering,
it dropped onto the fur
Here in front of the holy cave
I had wanted to know
where they had gone:
The wooly rhinoceros
and the mighty mammoth
the herds of horses and other animals
So I went to ask the spirits
To the dry drum's rhythm
I dreamed long and wandered far,
came to know many a thing,
as I was travelling to the inside
Again, it was the others
to whom we had given everything:
our best, from beds to birch pitch
and who never thanked us properly
Since they are hunting
the woods have gone quiet
and seem nearly dead
Greedy they are, and obnoxious
heartless and deceitful
Honour is just a word to them
and they are not faithful to any tradition
They are always driven by what is new
They empty every drinking-horn
at once and thoroughly
and they take everything
even when they already have so much
and they still want more
as long as it is of any use to them
They laugh about the way
we are living
Fand they call us demeaning names:
No Chin, Thick Hair and Sloping Forehead
the flat faced call us
those with the long, slender bodies
But this seems to be the worst to me:
They shy away from nothing
Everywhere they are spreading fear
They even batter their own kind
They don't seem to know any culture,
those men-bruisers,
men-killers
Skull-splitters with sharp spears
but their derision is even sharper
We of the old people have to make way
There's too little of us now
and we are obviously too peaceful
But that‘s how we've always been
and always will be

A huge amount of empathy in this almost hypnotic but heartfelt song. Poor neanderthals...I know we have a bit of genetic material still, but I can see homo spaiens just pushing them aside and not caring at all. As we do to each other. Perhaps next time round, on the way to the Omega Point, a better being may come into existence. One can hope. All things pass.

Wonderful collaboration! Reggae, the music of the suppressed. 100% right choise of gerne and you play it well. Touching lyrics really, cool viewpoint. I've never thought of relating to a Neanderthaler before. But I just read that the Neanderthal and Homo sapiens did interbreed, amazing but true. Plus, imagine all those stone age Romeo and Juliet stories..

"maybe not my last"?
