Feb 2022 rock live-instruments post-punk brother-collab no-excuses
guatecoop: Last year was tough for everyone, but we didn't get to spend any time together during FAWM, which was terrible. This year we are making up for that and loving every second, as my brother is spending a few days here. We started this song recording the bass and drums live (with only a scant plan) and then built the song from there. We've added all sorts of things until we felt like it was complete--literally taking turns on instruments and tracks. The idea was to make sure that the rhythm section held it down and we would make use of space, dynamics, and timing. We have both played a ton of parts on this song, so you get a pretty great idea of how we think independently and together-though he played bass and I played drums together on a complete 2 track base (well, maybe 9 for the mics and DI). We do feel comfortable enough to let each other play, but also can make suggestions, as well as reject those suggestions.....AHAHA. Super fun and much more to come.
ZeCoop: It is ALWAYS a highlight when we get together for FAWM, and last year was certainly a bummer. When I got here this weekend, Rob already had an idea for a simple song with repetitive bass and drum parts that we could build off of... We jammed a little... and immediately went off the rails. I mean the song doesn't necessarily have a complex base, but it isn't the same part like we thought. We just kept coming up with ideas, which is always fun. So we recorded the bass and drum live, with me kind of directing into the various sections we had come up with - and had a six minute long song. We were up until 3:30am last night and then spent all of our time after dinner today on it again. It's been so much fun. We write a play so differently in some ways but they come together to make something unique. Brother Collabs are one of the best things!
Nope, but we have a bet on who will throw their hat into the ring.....Let us know if you would like to sing on this.

This is so incredibly awesome! I've got to do a tape with both you guys next FAWM (4-track challenge). Love the driving rhythm and all of the tasty nuances throughout. The fuzz bass is masterful and Rob, your new room is sounding fabulous! Great job!

ooh love the panning (?) floyd-y guitars upon the tight rhythm section bed.
the thrill of playing live together does come through.
love the fuzzy bass too
cool stuff!

I was going to save listening and commenting until I finished my last FAWM demos but I just wanted to hear one brothers collab before I go back into my studio coal mine for the evening. This floats and builds so wonderfully. So many unexpected twists and turns. You guys are the best!

This is a great soundscape and I think it would be great in a movie. I see a young detective, she wanders city alleys at night, determined to unravel the city's mysteries and take down a crime syndicate. You guys really make great music together.

So happy for you guys that you can play and compose together! Love the vibe here, and that descending line is really nice. Another great song!
@tan482 Feb 2022
Ooh this is great! Agree with the western vibes that one of the other comments mentioned. Can’t wait to hear some lyrics with this.
@ndavies Feb 2022
Love the energy and mood on this. Looking forward to hearing it with so-and-so's vocals
@mandolinda Feb 2022
Technique driven, nice. Not over the top loud (which I like). Very good musicians.

This is modern western posse riding out for the big gun fight music.
My mind pictures a version of the Lil Naz X/ Sam Elliot SuperBowl commercial a couple a years back.
@srcoops Feb 2022
You are right.. Brother collabs are great. Wish I could do something besides whistle and we would have a three part family thing. Oh well, I will hum along.

Woooooooowwww, this is so cool! I love that driving repetitive bass and drums, and then all this other stuff happening on top. Makes me feel like I'm driving high speed through all sorts of landscapes that keep changing, I sort of want to make a video just by driving around and filming stuff. Love that volume swell guitar!
@metalfoot Feb 2022
Very nice. Great chemistry (as one would expect) between the brothers!
@danvaillancourt Feb 2022
Nice! Love that that fat driving bass, spacey effected guitars and driving drums. Rock! Looking forward to hearing it with lyrics/vocals too.
