My capering days are over
‘Cept for an old fool’s dance
Spindly spiny footloose
Found my sweet romance
A goofy bit of prank it was
For I’m an old scofflaw
I love a caper that’s gone right
And an old bone to gnaw
Chorus:
Those were the days, the capering days
Struggle and song, dreams of a fool
That was the time of made-up rhymes
For the head of the class
At the Ding Dong School
Sprinkle it with capers
Flinders Rose and cheese
Oh the taste of fresh smoked fish
Tomatoes, stout and peas
Mugs and thugs and drugs
Goodbye to you all
Dames and games and stoke the flames
A burning folderol
Chorus
Those were the days, the capering days
Struggle and song, the dreams of a fool
That was the time of made up rhymes
For the head of the class
At the Ding Dong School
Met her April Fools Day
With a smirk and a wink
Of course, the joke was on me
Didn’t know what to think
Deer in the headlights
Almost out of time
The build up, it was precious
But her punchline was sublime
Repeat Chorus
Repeat
For the head of the class
At the Ding Dong School
For the head of the class
At the Ding... Dong... School

This reminds me of my youth listening to Dubliners and the like with my grandad. The lyrics are witty and clever and the full band treatment makes the track more modern despite the traditional Irish melody.
Great fun.
