Song 9 of 14
A song about poverty and hard times inspired by memories of my grand-da. The storyteller in the song is not me...I always heeded to my grand-da's advice.
Granddaddy was born in the wrong place
Raised up the wrong way
Studied at the school of hard knocks
Harsh lessons every day make no mistake
And all he ever wanted was an even break
They were rough times, tough times
Looked like an old man when he was forty-nine
Life threw at him everything he could take
All he ever wanted was an even break
Worked the killing floor in an abattoir
Money was not so good
Bareknuckle boxing in the alley ways
Took home every penny that he could make
And he never stopped dreaming of an even break
He told me when I was younger
This is what you have to do
Go to school, work hard, get smarter
Don’t be anybody’s fool
Didn’t heed Granddaddy's advice
Here I am a failure
Knife in my hand, monkey on my back,
And the hound dogs on my tail are making me quake
Who's ever gonna give me an even break
Who's ever gonna give me an even break
I'm never gonna get an even break

I like it, Paddy. The wisdom of our elders is not often heeded until they are long gone. Good story song with great feeling.
