ahh, I'm so tired of being sick, I stay up to finish FAWM songs and it just makes it worse. I'm reaching the limits of what I think is cool to do when singing with a cold lol.
this is a set of lyrics i had lying around in the last year, I kind of had the idea for the melody but the chords took some time to figure out. I did the lead vox and bass in one take, then added some overdubs and vocal harmonies and then a drum loop and some "guitar" fills (I think of six string bass like tofu, it's not really guitar but it gets the job done) and now I reallllly need to go to bed
this is the second song in a row I've written with a line about lemonade. I don't even really like lemonade, what is going on.
nothing else like living
to make you feel alive
but somewhere in the process
are the thousand deaths to die
the death of possibilities,
the death of drive?
just when I think I haven’t left,
it turns out I’ve arrived
Ironic that I spent
most of my 20’s in my head
when not inside a bottle
or off scrounging up my bread
and now I find new lines
around my eyes
just when I think I haven’t left,
it turns out I’ve arrived
something about aging tho,
it fills me with regret
some kind of indecision hits
when I roll out of bed
is so much work required
just to try?
just when I think I haven’t left,
it turns out I’ve arrived
once I thought I had to be
a great man in the books
just to come to realize
that most of them are crooks
what do I do with all my
disillusioned lullabies
what difference does it make,
you can't be saved
but you can try
the lemonade is ready,
should I throw away the rind?
just when I think I haven’t left,
it turns out I’ve arrived
just when I think I haven’t left,
it turns out I’ve arrived

“Just when I think I haven’t left/ it turns out I’ve arrived” WHAT a LINE! Damn. This is a freak-folk classic and I love it. The weird spacey sounds . It’s so cool.

The soundscape you've created for this one is stunning. It feels really loose and freeform, but then at the same time incredibly tight. Not sure how you've achieved that. Voodoo, maybe. I love the sleepy vocal and harmonies, and totally sympathise on the having a cold thing. I seem to get one every February, just in time for FAWM, too :(
@warriorchild Feb 2022
The melody and the chord changes are just amazing with the lyrics. I've enjoyed all of your songs, and this one is definitely up there.
@raspberry33 Feb 2022
Provocative lyrics. I love the intertwined harmonies, the brushed drums, and the killer bass. And the vocals are great!
@splittybooms Feb 2022
Wooow...this reminds me of some earlier Sia, some of the first stuff of hers I ever heard that made me a fan.
If this is you singing with a cold, and sounding so friggin good, you must be scary without one!
Love these lyrics - includes several thoughts I've been having myself lately.
"is so much work required just to try?" - that specifically...
Your singing style and your voice are so perfect on this.
More perfection comes with everything you're doing musically.
The bass sounds so good - both the low broken up bass part and the higher melodic stuff. That's some good tofu.
That brush drum loop was a great choice.
Oy the harmonies are doing me in.
Think I've listened three times now while I type stuff up about this.
Excellent track! This would be straight into my spotifiy library if I came across it randomly.

That super cool bass, delightful harmonies and gorgeous chord changes are fab.
Love the chorus hook and the lyric
"once I thought I had to be
a great man in the books
just to come to realize
that most of them are crooks"
- love it

Really like the scaled down arrangement, suits this song perfect. The upright bass is so cool and the harmonies that you make with your voice are just lovely.
@jessespillane Feb 2022
I love the big sound of the upright bass in this. It has so much character. I like the loose swing and how all the individual parts intertwine in really interesting ways. Really catchy as well.
Great work!
@deena Feb 2022
Amazing vocals and wonderful lyrics. You sound great despite the cold. I hope you feel better soon!
@andrewrusse Feb 2022
Wow, just wow.
@adforperu Feb 2022
Hey, lean into that lemonade love. It's a decent drink, all things considered. There's a real wonky lullaby feel to this, the way your vocal dances around the progression is so lovely. the little (and I do mean little) imperfections in your voice, you really make work and really services the song.
@liz561 Feb 2022
Love the second verse especially! Alida gave me your handle. Your production is really great. The bass is awesome.
@leepat Feb 2022
great hook and sweet harmonies!
the laid-back tempo and the cold-stricken voice are a great fit for the lyrics. the 2nd verse stands out especially for me, but the others are great too.
good stuff!
@timfatchen Feb 2022
You're doing okay, cold notwithstanding. The lyric is pretty good. I like the melody and your bass +backing vocals work it well.
This segment played without drum track: "once I thought I had to be/a great man in the books/just to come to realize/that most of them are crooks" really shines, as I find the drum loop was getting in the way of everything else to my ears. Something there doesn't seem quite right and to me the whole song might lift without that loop, relying on your voice and bass and backing vocals. FWIW...anyway, don't stop, cold notwithstanding. You can always do spoken word with that standard of lyric.
(Incidentally, that line is a great truth that most of us come to realise far too late. Or if not crooks, then cheats, liars, narcissists, charlatans and manipulators....)
