Polysemy Challenge: wish you well, wishing well
Wishing well for someone close with an addiction problem.
Wishing Well
©Mark Greenberg February 18, 2022
The troubles that you tell me
Dark and deep as a well can be
Weigh on your soul constantly
You say your addiction
Answers pain and how you cope
I’m one of those who love you
But not how you behave
I wish you well, to be free and not a slave
I wish you well, I wish you well
But you mock me for my hope
I’ve thrown penny after penny in my wishing well
Hoping for the change, the change you need
I’d dump a million dollars if it could rearrange
Your upside down priorities
I wish you’d change, I wish you’d change,
And I wish you well

I’ve known people my entire adult life who struggle. It’s been a long time since any of them did direct harm to me, but I know that story.
Somebody you care about, yeah, you wish them well. But you don’t want collateral damage to your own life either.

You really hit it on the mark, I've been there, actually still there, and I know the frustration of "wishing someone well" but being pretty much powerless to make it happen. I hope whoever you wrote the song about can overcome.

Nice, solemn, minor chords. I can hear the pain. Wanting someone to change, not being able to do anything about it, but being absolutely willing to do anything about it.

Your deep voice suits the subject and feel. The symbolism of the wishing well is potent, and resonates for me personally. The pennies and repetitions ... yeah.

Nice take on the challenge and impressive work on a difficult to deal with subject! Definitely relatable for many. Good job!!

I've really been enjoying HBO's EUPHORIA about addiction. (And earlier this year enjoyed Hulu's DOPESICK about the same.
These are great lyrics--sad that we've lost so many great musicians to drugs over the years...

Superb. This really captures the frustration of watching a close friend "racing at full speed down a dead end" as a song I wrote on a similar theme this FAWM puts it.
Good use of simple statements to mean so much more and nice use of rhymes too.

Love what you did with the challenge! Cool tune!

Exellent work on the challenge.... I'm an empath who has helped a friend with addictions, rehab, prison... and some others as well... I read recently an empath is the opposite of a narcissist and it's similar to what an AA leader said to me once. It's hard to step away when you want so much to help them and they have to find their own way... and when they are ready... you step in again with hope... eventually they seem to start looking at the bright side again for a moment before they crash back down again...sigh. I'm sorry you are going through all this hell as well... Every word in your tune hits every nerve in the process. I wish your friend well...as well as mine.

Great use of the challenge. I would imagine many people here can relate to this. I definitely can. I'm sorry you have this real life challenge.
@cleanshoes Feb 2022
Nice take on this challenge. These lyrics hit close to home.
@mikeb Feb 2022
Great idea to use 2 words that together have multiple meanings! And also using a secondary word with two meanings, too (change).
A very solemn song, but a very meaningful song to a friend.

Cool! I'm impressed with anyone who can pull off the polysemy challenge and you have. Great concept here, and you set an evocative scene here. I like especially like "I’m one of those who love you/But not how you behave" and "I’d dump a million dollars if it could rearrange." Nice job
