Feb 2022 wormcore old-time swing happy-worms gardening mercy-me-the-ecology
My wife used to raise earthworms in the bathtub. When people would visit, we'd say: Best not to use that bathtub. The roses loved the dirt they produced, and the kitchen scraps were put to good use. Now we have a house with a large garden so the worms are outdoors. We feed them every day. My wife said: You've got to write a song about the worms. So I went for a walk and came up with this. I hope you like it.
Maybe it will inspire you.

If the worms are happy
Then everybody’s happy
If the worms are thriving
We’re doing more than surviving
If the worms are boisterous and multiplying
Then the birds and flowers and bees won’t be dying
The grass will be lush and the apples will blossom
So feed your scraps to the worms, don’t toss ‘em.
I peel my potatoes and carrots too
Take the big chunks and put ‘em in a stew
I get a plastic bag for the peels and scraps
And then I stop - and say, Oh crap!
That’s worm food, baby (x3)
Go outside and give it to the worms
Cause if the worms are happy...
(Every schoolboy knows about the Diet of Worms)
I used to bin my eggshells, banana skins
My coffee grounds too - I didn’t know it was a sin,
I had a big plastic bag, and put everything in it
Then one day I stopped - and said, Wait a minute!
That's worm food, baby...
So give the lowly worm a little respect
Cause you like to eat too, last time I checked
Go on and feed the worms, give ‘em their due
And just remember: you’re worm food too!
And if the worms are happy...

Delightful! A swingin' good-time, feel-good number that makes me appreciate the activity in my compost pile even more. Wonderful vocals!

Love this!!

This is a great extension to that saying "If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy." to "If Mama's worms ain't happy, ain't nobody happy"
I'm so happy that the line "you're worm food too" is in there.
There's a great kids song by Robbie Schaefer called "There's a carp in the tub." that feels like it's ready for a rewrite as "There's worms in the tub"

What a lovely PSA: we've just moved to a place where composting and vegetable gardening are a real possibility, and I'm already lobbying for a bin.

Love the production on this and the vocal effects, this is such a wonderful style for a worm song!! I love it, joyous and educational, descriptive....so clever and love this style, great outro...I think this is awesome!

Fun song! I've visited Worms in 2020 so based on the title I expected an historical song, but this is much better! I've never heard before of people who are cultivating worms in their bathtub, but why not indeed.
@kadmad202 Feb 2022
Clever title, Jon! For those who don't get the reference, check out Google. The song is pure sparkle and sunlight. Such a fun song to promote good composting habits! And the music fits to a tee. Love the outro - I can almost see the little worms with their little mouths open : )
And the line about being worm food: my partner and I are considering green burial, and we found out that we would get buried only 3 feet deep, so the worms, you know, can do their thing. Dust to dust, and all that...
Great song!

There’s a bright smile in my face now Jon. Thank you for the music,
and the words.
We’ve got several Bokashi buckets in our garden…

Hilarious! And true!
@jerrypettit Feb 2022
The best song about worms I've ever heard!!!
Really, really impressive "technical skills" here--mixing, balancing, mastering. And what a vocal! This is absolutely "radio-ready".
Great job!
@mikeb Feb 2022
I know I've never heard a happy worm song before! A good pro-composting tune!
@dragondreams Feb 2022
This is quite simply the wormiest earworm metatune I've ever heard! And it's the work of genius. Okay, possibly mad genius, but still genius! :-D
@donna Feb 2022
This is wonderful. LOL Love the imagery, the details, the music, the performance... Everything! Dang! I'll never look at worms in the same way again. :)
I even like the gleeful touch of sinister in that last line. ;)

Oh no! @jonmeta, you're old enough in FAWM terms to know the dangers of releasing worms! Surely you recall the Wurmageddon of th 2015 FAWM, you were here! How the forums writhed and wriggled, how the WORMku took over and the Wormericks muliplied! Beware! Beware of what you might be unleashing! Danger! Danger!

Geez. i guess I'd better comment on the song...oh no, it's what I feared! Happy worms controlling us all, how could anyone be fearful of such a happy and cute and foot-tapping old-time call-and-answer chorus and song. I BET your wife loved it! Mine would if I dared let her hear. But oh, the worms! the worms! I'm getting flashbacks...their little mouths wide opn...run away, run awaaaaay!!!
