Feb 2022 music s-not-for-everyone rock glitter performing
This one's for all the performing musicians who still enjoy playing out. All of us had crazy dreams when we started, many had success, but we're all driven to light up the night, perform, and Glitter Up the Dark. Musical influences here were "Bang a Gong" by T-rex, "Legs" by ZZ Top, and Don Henley/Glenn Frey for attitude. This is just a demo - if anyone's interested in adding real drums and competent guitar to a backing track, let me know!
GLITTER UP THE DARK
c. 2022 raspberry33 (T. Higgins)
V1:
Yeah, it starts when you’re little
That love of applause
The warmth of the spotlight Colorized Oz
That dopamine surge bathing your brain
So you go back and do it
again and again and again
This ain’t for the bashful No walk in the park
But you know when you must Glitter up the dark
V2:
So you jettison cargo of the bourgeois scene
Dream of your face on People magazine
Take the stage, let your rage burn every bridge in sight
Get in that cage, fight the same lion every night
If a window’s open, you gotta climb on thru
Be sure to make your mark
‘Cause it’s your job, now to Glitter up the dark
Chorus:
We don’t choose what we like
But we like what we choose
That’s how novelty becomes addiction
Once you enter this game
You can’t win if you lose
So feed yourself a lot of fiction…
Instrumental
V3:
And the years turn to decades a career in quicksand
Playing open mic nights sitting in with bar bands
Fewer hands are clapping But you know, that’s alright
Cause at least you’re still in the spotlight
You could still deliver fireworks
If you had the right spark
‘Cause you’re still chasing chances
To Glitter Up the Dark (x2)
Chorus 2:
It’s not an obsession any more than you’d call it
A part of you – a special part of you
If you have to explain it, then you might as well not
Try to change my point of view
We don’t choose what we like
But we like what we choose
That’s how novelty becomes addiction
Once you enter this game you’re guaranteed to lose
If you keep on believing fiction
Outro:
And who’s obligated to fix the chaos we created?
I hear the new brew-pub has a stage
Yeah, I keep a guitar in the trunk
You know, just in case…

Really like the words of the chorus-good wordplay! Nice instrumental break too.

Love the TRex vibe. Lots of awesome lines and wordplay. I like the vocal delivery and it really uses the song. The little lead parts coming in and out are fun. Lines like "you jettison cargo of the bourgeois scene" are just so fun. Love as the storyline evolves for the character. Glitter up the dark!

A very fine song musically and lyrically. It has the finesse of a Randy Newman number. That lyric is very good, it made me smile, the outro bit was a nice touch.

Guitar sounds pretty competently rockin’ to me! Great track — I definitely miss performing, and I’d gladly take a gig in a coffeehouse for 10 people! I’ve certainly had the thoughts of “and now, celebrating the artist of the decade, with 100 million albums sold… meeeeee*, but I’m honestly happy now just to make music for the fun of it, which is a much more fulfilling success :-)

Fabulous lyrics with great imagery. I also really like your melody and full band accompaniment. This song has it all. Feels quite professional. What a great song. I'm glad I stopped by to have a listen.

This is really excellent, a real study in the psychology of performance, as well as a damn catchy and witty and wise song- and the backing, etc sounds fine! (guitar is great, btw) This is seriously wonderful, and should be up there with billy joel's 'piano man'!
