I’m not entirely sure where this one came from. I think it’s one of those journal entry-style songs that dredges up some unconscious work that I’m doing. I’ve been thinking a lot about shame and its role in preventing us from being our full creative selves. So I guess I dedicate this song to Brené Brown and all the courageous people daring to be who they really are.
In other words, “haters gonna hate.”
Musically, I tried something experimental towards the end, running my bass through a compressor, volume pedal, overdrive, analog delay, and a TON of reverb. I think it sounds kind of organ-y or synth-y. In another recording, I think I’d like to make that part longer and more epic.
V1:
If they were coming for you
What would you do? Would you
Tune up your guitar
And point it at their hearts of lead?
We get crucified in the comments
Our ideas sunk with cement
A brick for every word
Four walls made up of hurt keeping us quiet
Chorus:
Tar and feathers
Chains and tethers
Let’s find a way out, c’mon, let’s go
Pain and egos
Tell me where do we go
When our selves just melt away like snow
V2:
Oh I saw you painting flowers
Underneath some snowy bower
At first you painted the bare ground
And waited through the sound of the rain
They mocked your desolation
Questioned drive and motivation
But beneath frozen earth, a bulb
Waiting to bloom all in their time

Fantastic! Just heard this on Calum’s show. Love it. Lyrically interesting and the guitar…Oh my…just wonderful.

The guitar is so pretty, it almost reminds me of Nick Drake or something. I have a soft spot in my heart for this overall mood/vibe. I feel like I stepped into a dark coffeehouse where an audience is watching, hushed and totally along for the ride. Really nice.
