Feb 2022 piano pripyat radioactive improvisation instrumental
Improv piece using the Pripyat Radioactive Pianos from Strix Instruments.
Not lyrics - info about the sampled pianos.
"33 years of harsh weather conditions and radiation, 33 years of silence, 33 years of hopeless expectation of human touch. PRIPYAT Pianos is a sound museum, created 33 years after a massive man-made disaster that has affected hundreds of thousands of lives. This is the mark of the elapsed time.
"Radioactive Pianos from the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone
"For seven years Strix Instruments' team has made more than 25 trips to the city of Pripyat for a detailed collection of audio materials. Strix Instruments found and recorded 20 instruments in various parts of Pripyat that are of different levels of preservation and functionality. This amount of instruments was necessary to create a tool suitable not only for sound design but also for writing compositions.
"Strix Instruments' goal was to create a virtual instrument that will show the nature of the degradation of instruments under the effects of harsh weather conditions and radiation, yet which also would have the purest sound. All the pianos Strix Instruments could find participated in the creation of the final sound."

I just picked this up so it's cool to hear how you're utilizing it. I'm still trying to figure out where to place this in a production, but this gives me some great ideas on it's usage.

Fascinating - both the story and song. Those are some oddly lovely piano sounds.

Oh, this is lovely! Those echoey slightly out-of-tune sounding pianos fit this sad lonely piece so well. A simple but beautiful melody played high above the arpeggios beneath it, coming down to mix with what sounds like a slowly deteriorating bass line. Love the dissonances here and there. What starts out clear and haunting ends up confused and distraught but still lonely. Love it! Very thoughtful and creative. I listened four times.

Very haunting and hallowed halls feel to this one.

Listening before reading the story:
"Feels like somebody walking through a giant basement in an abandoned school full of old upright pianos. There's a flesh of dust on all of them and as the person aimlessly plunks notes on each one, a cloud of dust shoots up revealing the stories and memories stored eternal in each piano's rarely head voice."
Listening After reading the story:
"Wwwhhhhaaaaaattttttt!?!?! That's an incredible concept!!"
@gm7 Feb 2022
The piano does reflect a wasteland feel...well done.

What a fascinating story, and interesting improv. I wanted the melody to go on much longer.

Re-using some words already mentioned, haunting, atmospheric. It sounds like the intro piece that could frame the nuclear piano story, as they progress through their metamorphosis into dust. The sound kind of reminds me of a piano sound you might find in a back Street pub, played often, but unloved.

The out-of-tune sound along with the reverb (natural?) gives this a very stark haunted sound.
@headfirstonly Feb 2022
Love this - it really captures the feel of a gathering of abandoned, radioactive pianos lurking in the shadows of gently decaying buildings...
They hunt in packs, you know.

I really didn't know what the tags meant, but this is fascinating! I've seen loads of pictures from Chernobyl and I find them to be absolutely riveting. This song has quite an atmosphere....kind of like if I were to be walking around there--a little creepy, definitely solitary (well, in the physical sense, hmmm), and thought provoking. I've never heard about these samples, but they are really cool!! Well done.

Wow, really interesting liner notes....very atmospheric and soothing piece of music.

Had to come bad for some more radioactive half-life experimentation. So intriguing.
@crutherford Feb 2022
fantastic. i told my family at the dinner table last night about this radiation piano project of yours... you are now a celebrity in our house. i'll show them this today and send you feedback. :)
@ductapeguy Feb 2022
You captured the spirit of the incredible haunting story of the samples.

Hauntingly beautiful, I can’t believe this was improvised!
