First thing I remember was a white hot pain
Offered to the Sultan for my mother's gain
Growing up in training as a sexless slave
I never thought of love until you looked my way
The girl from Baikal
You looked at me and saw me-- and loved it all
The girl from the Uyghur tribe
But I'm your guard and you're his concubine
But we should've been girls
Every day I walk the parapet
Your quarters are the only place that I wanna get
I teach you how to henna-dye your nails our way
You teach me how to plait my mustache like your braids
The girl from Baikal
You looked at me and saw me-- but loved it all
The girl from the Uyghur tribe
But I'm your guard and you're his concubine
Oh
But we should've been girls
Lost in your perfumed rooms
Losing layers of silk
Nothing on but the light of the moon
We should've been girls
Splashing in the fountain at night
I'd sneak you down, no one around
We could play man and wife
But we should've been girls
But I'm not Ramachandran, you're not Sita fair
Ravana has much more to give than I can bear
Still you took my face in your hands
Your lips meet mine, I'm in your foreign lands and-- and--
Hand on my collar, I am dragged away
You cry and scream it was a joke, please let him stay
The girl from Baikal
You looked at me and saw me-- but loved it all
Not quite the way I did
But you told me that you understood with that one kiss
Oh
That we should've been girls
Lost in your perfumed rooms
Losing layers of silk
Nothing on but the light of the moon
We should've been girls
Splashing in the fountain at night
I'd sneak you down, no one around
We could play man and wife
We should've been girls
Girls, girls girls
Hauling produce to the marketplace
People buy but nobody will look at my face
They all know what I am
They don't see me how you saw me-- not less than a man but more
The girl from Baikal
Who looked at me and saw me-- and loved it all

Such an unusual song subject! Great storytelling that really draws you in. I like the slightly bluesy feel to certain parts of the vocal melody ("Your quarters are... for example).

It's a gripping (and painful) storyline...with a high degree of pathos in there. The powerful warp the world all ways, always.

Catchy chorus and terrific lyrics! A song that feels and plays out like a short story. Well done.

Nothing on but the light of the moon
Great line! I think this should be made into a movie!
I love this rhythmic write, emotional and your phrasing, I was so caught up in the story, so descriptive, this is a wonderful song!
