Feb 2022 slothwave synth 80s-era-sexual-politics b-movie
This one was inspired by @wacha in the "Let's make up new genres" thread (https://fawm.org/forums/topic/12186/#c256543) who suggested Slothwave, really down tempo synth music.
40BPM is as slow as the DAW goes, so that’s where we start.
Recently I acquired Cherry Audio’s Synth Stack 2 collection (https://cherryaudio.com/products/synth-stack-2), which is a bundle of all their amazing vintage
synth emulations, and I got the idea to build the track using the entire collection*. I didn't get them all, but I found a place for Memorymode, Mercury-4, CA2600, Eight-Voice, PS-20, DCO-106 and Surrealist MG-1. which isn't too shabby.
So I put something together, and… well I invented Vangelis. Maybe not exactly, but it was definitely giving me that Blade Runner vibe, so I thought if it’s going to sound like a film score, why not go with that.
In a stroke of pure limited imagination, I thought what better film than 1987’s Cherry 2000 (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092746/) to go with the Cherry Audio synths! Like they say, put it in a bowl of soup.
I had never seen the movie, but how hard could it be to pull a couple of quotes from it…
Not easy.
Eventually I pulled a bunch of stuff and formed a vague narrative, but it was too wordy, so I had to edit, and edit, and edit.
Finally I think I trimmed it down to something that still retained the films core theme that women are not things and men can acquire those non-things by being slightly less creepy than the other men. I think it was suppose to play as progressive, but it’s a John Hughs love story in Mad Max clothing.
Anyway, I’m about 50/50 on this one. It’s good enough to put put on my FAWM stack, but it’s straddling the line of being just a FAWM song.

Instrumental with audio.

Very cool 80's synth feel in here, the added dialogue fits nicely and keeps the story going, the ending line is a nice reference to the concept.
I also made a track using Cherry Audio synths only as well if you had interest.

I've never heard of this movie and now if I ever do again I'm just going to think of your weird and cool track...from your description I'm thinking this song is kinda better than the movie though.

I feel like I should have popcorn right now. In a truck bed at the drive in. Such futuristic sounds with a old school vibe. Dig it.

I'm really digging this. The groove of the percussion, and the atmospheric strings have a kind of gritty warmth.
I kind of want to see this movie now.

Hello from Reddit! Happy to see what you're working on. This has a real "Friends of Mr Cairo" vibe... I don't know - maybe it's just the movie quotes.
