A "Skirmish" is a group songwriting sprint. A time is announced, a writing prompt given, and then everyone has 1 HOUR to write a song.
After you finish your song post it in this thread below.
Part of the process (and fun) is commenting on the other participants songs and seeing what they came up with.
If it takes a little longer than an hour that is fine. Post and comment anyway.
I will announce the writing prompt here at the start.
Today's Skirmish writing prompt is: Overcome myself
I saw this a few minutes late but got to work and the song pretty much wrote itself. I read the prompt. got my journal from upstairs, made a cup of tea and the feel and rhythm of the song came to me (which I cribbed from another VERY famous artists that you're willing to guess).
I tried to add some cajon because I had the time and thought it would work well but if I learned anything from my last song it's to quite while your ahead. I wanted to go back to my more traditional style on this one and and very happy with what I got.
This is also the first song I use the word "ain't".
Verse: am dm
Chorus: F G am
Verse:
I've been thinking I've been wronged
Been that what all along
So I write these songs
And I sing them
Just trying to set the record straight
Maybe this is just my fate
I'm so filled with hate
And I grow bitter
Chorus:
Oh, I can't overcome myself
So I burn in hell
Oh, I can't overcome myself
So I burn in hell
Verse:
I go out waling each night
Oh lord I know it ain't right
Just looking for some light
But I find darkness
They say there's a plan
I try to understand
Just need a helping hand
But they're all empty
Chorus:
Oh, I can't overcome myself
So I burn in hell
Oh, I can't overcome myself
So I burn in hell

#tit4tat Smash out of the blocks! Hm this is a fav! You really get emotion up to 11. Its a great lyric to throw everything at and you do! A perfect song for you. Top stuff this one!
@deena Feb 2022
Powerful!
@boycetown Feb 2022
What I really like is that you sing with a passion. Makes the song feel real, and when I know that it's important to you then I am listening. And I guess I'll see you in hell.
@wolfkier Feb 2022
There's something timeless and deeply "human condition" about this. It really digs deep and hits deeper. A real keeper, my friend. A serious keeper. Well done indeed.

You are a skirmish queen, Wacha. Working under a time constraint…some of us clam up!! One thing I love about your lyrics is the honesty. Solid songwriting with some subtle Melissa Etheridge and Natalie Merchant soul in it. The way you sing “sooooooo I burn in hell” is so emotive! Love it.
@gm7 Feb 2022
Ain't this a "Wacha' hard strumming guitars song.( I used Ain't Catherine) Full of energy and emotion with a dark message.
@arthurrossi Feb 2022
This has a lovely guitar-driven pace and tune to it. I like how the words concentrate more on the "inner emotional state" than on the things that surround us. Beautiful and powerful vocal delivery!
@kahlo2013 Feb 2022
Wow! This is powerful and perfectly performed! Love the strength in the vocals and the driving guitar. Strong pointed chorus full of such angst!
@beat Feb 2022
Again… oh what a voice. Full of energy.

I like the smoky bar flavour, the mix of self-acceptance and its opposite: overcoming yourself or having a feeling that's the task but you're stuck and hellbound might not be the best to deal with it emotionally, but it's very Americana: in truth we're humanly interdependent and not superhuman to absorb all trauma and complexity in our lives, yet messages from everywhere blame us for our lot and tells us not to blame other people - the kind of toxic positivity and self-undermining American Dream 'work hard, get yours' thing reacted against in Alanis Morissette's Ironic (she'd experienced abuse & exploitation all her life; that wasn't her fault). Shit happens, it's not all or nothing!
@nadine Feb 2022
Sounds like you're singing this straight from the gard. I like your rock voice here. And the performance us driven and wild. Great stuff. One of my favourites from you.
@bjunker Feb 2022
Driving. Emotional. Perfect.
There's lots of ways to go with this, but one might be more of a punk treatment... Whatever you do, it will be good.
@gubna Feb 2022
I'm gonna let this one sit in my head a bit. It's still playing in my head. Powerful lyrics indeed!
@zeekle1998 Feb 2022
Powerful, emotional, dark and just damn fantastic. Loved the vocals on this, really shows off your talent.
@robynmackenzie Feb 2022
Fantastic chorus! Really drives home the darkness. That driving guitar has so much great energy. Good stuff!
@coolparadiso Feb 2022
killing themself with the guitar! A better option! Very strong complete song! very good!
@dzdandcunfsd Feb 2022
This is great! I especially love those last two versus.. only finding darkness and the hands all being empty, super vivid...yet mysterious at the same time and wonderful emotion packed delivery here. I wouldn't even dare guess about this rhythm, it could be 1000 different old country songs :D Great work! Really enjoyed this a lot.
@blindsheepdog Feb 2022
great droney desperate feel
@seemanski Feb 2022
Wow, I just feel so sorry for the character in this. Sounds like they are being a bit too hard on themselves. This is dark and really emotional, great write.
@sheilerk Feb 2022
This is a real standout song, Both because of your great vocal dynamics and the dark lyrics, that make me want more of the story. Really nicely done!
@berni1954 Feb 2022
Love that driving guitar and your emotional and energetic vocal.
I love the mystery in this story. What exactly is this darkness that the narrator finds at night? This is a brilliant song and even more so for a skirmish! Chapeau!
@ajna1960 Feb 2022
Gorgeous lyric, if I can say that about such a tough subject. I love it, and your vocal surely does it incredible justice. Defo a keeper :) Did I say I love it ? :)
@keithcuts Feb 2022
emotionally charged verse and chorus
power in this song lyrically and musically
its a highly relatable song
a hit!
@tunecat Feb 2022
A strong song of fierceness and that energy is filling my room right now. You go!!
