verse 1
used to wonder why they sat there drinkin
sad sacks at the bar
yeah i used to wonder what they were thinkin
to let it get that far.
now i get where they're comin from
the "see ya later" in their alligator
they figure they can drink now--
and cry later.
verse 2
now i wonder why it is i sit here drinkin
but then
considerin how things are
things've gone south, and keep on sinkin
how'd it ever get this far?
now it's my time to ride the barstool
it doesn't really matter how it's stated
i'm guessin i can drink now--
and cry later.
CHORUS:
i moan drink now, and later on i can cry
tears don't come if you're completely dry
tears deferred or pain delayed--
not sure which one's greater
see i figure i can drink now, so i can cry later.
verse 3
no longer
wonder why it is i sit here drinkin
i'm a member now, got my card
it's my duty from which i ain't shrinkin
but now it's hitting me hard.
now i wonder if it could have been avoided
but i'm getting the feeling it was fated
so i guess i'll go ahead and drink now--
i can cry later.
DOUBLE CHORUS OUT
i moan drink up now so later on i can cry...

I like the way the verse lines stay busy until that line "and cry later" - this feels like the attempt to distract ourselves from pain, by doing stuff and by drinking when we run out of stuff to do.
In the chorus, I think that second line might be even stronger if you tweaked it to be something like:
Tears won't come, til I'm completely dry

Before I noted the tags, when I read the title, I thought, "this one has to be a country song!" And I was correct. I love these sort os laments...the bottled up way that men in our society are supposed to process emotion, and never, ever, ever let it show. Nice set of classic country lyrics.
@fiteclub, I think you'd like these lyrics!

That's a good old hurtin' country song. A little ole lonesome at the bar. Nice lyrics.
