In new relationships you attempt to not say a certain three words too early. You want to wait it out, see how things go, and maybe make sure it's safe before you let those words pass your lips.
I feel this one has a good foundation, but the studs are little uneven. There's a bunch of good here, especially in the verses, but I think the second prechorus and the choruses need a little more work.
I guess you could say
I’m afraid of come what may
And that I can’t decide
Between this and my peace of mind
It’s gonna take some time
Before we see the other side
It takes everything I have
To hold back these words
But I think you’re doing it too
Being careful with the words you choose
We can take it day by day
Being careful each step we take
But these masks we wear
Will slowly fade away as we stay
It’ll be a little while before
We risk those three words
It takes everything I have
To hold back these words
But I think you’re doing it too
Being careful with the words you choose
Neither of us wants to rush
So we’re keeping things hushed
Here we both had to choose
To be careful with I love you
It’s not that I don’t want to tell you
Because believe me I do
It’s not that I don’t know what to say
I’m just waiting to know it’s safe
It takes everything I have
To hold back these words
But I think you’re doing it too
Being careful with the words you choose
Neither of us wants to rush
So we’re keeping things hushed
Here we both had to choose
To be careful with I love you

Yes! So relatable about those "three words" and wanting to say theme but not letting them out too soon - great start here. Like the way you go to a staccato guitar rhythm in the chorus.
