Feb 2022 political synth pop electropop week2 one-note-melody
Been feeling a lot of rage and sadness about the current state of the world and political systems, so here's my middle finger to The Man.
Not sure I love it. Not sure it's done. But it's FAWM so here you go.
You called
Just to sling your paralytic medicine
These walls
Have a tendency to be so very thin
And I heard a rumor that you're gonna ruin everything
Your face
On a black and white television set
These days
Apocalyptic but it's still not over yet
And I gotta get my shit together 'cause that's what you said
Yeah that's what you said
But I'm still not having a good time
And I'm still not satisfied
Yeah I'm just not having a good time
So fuck you and this party, I'm not dancing anymore
Because I don't like your friends and this scene is such a bore
I hear your voice on the airwaves, catching flies with poisoned honey
But fuck your lies, fuck your bombs, fuck your money
You stand
In the center of the world, all eyes on you
Your hands
Tied behind your back so whatcha gonna do
I got a creepy little feeling, call it deja vu
Ooh
And I'm still not having a good time
No I'm still not satisfied
Yeah I'm just not having a good time
So fuck you and this party, I'm not dancing anymore
Because I don't like your friends and this scene is such a bore
I hear your voice on the airwaves, catching flies with poisoned honey
But fuck your lies, fuck your bombs, fuck your money
Sell me something inspirational, celebrational, not too radical
(my head's on fire, fire, my head's on fire, fire)
Wish I could make you wait and see what it means to be me, but you don't even see
(This world's on fire, fire, this world's on fire)
Yeah
So fuck you and this party, I'm not dancing anymore
Because I don't like your friends and this scene is such a bore
I hear your voice on the airwaves, catching flies with poisoned honey
But fuck your lies, fuck your bombs, fuck your money
Fuck you and this party, I'm not dancing anymore
Because I don't like your friends and this scene is such a bore
I hear your voice on the airwaves, catching flies with poisoned honey
But fuck your lies, fuck your bombs, fuck your money
Fuck your lies, fuck your bombs, fuck your money
@sph Mar 2022
Think I like this original version the most. This is just great.
The chorus will be my sing-a-long tune on the bicycle...
@ambroise Mar 2022
Is that the more bad-ass disco music I've ever heard (or I am mixing the labels again) ?
killer line : "But I'm still not having a good time / And I'm still not satisfied"
@apolez3 Feb 2022
Great melody ! and the way you sing it is kewl... (funny-ish) lyrics love the poisoned honey phrase~ reminds me of this song I heard
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYLcu5tFjUU&t=8s
also makes me think though; who's money is money anyways... it's like a current that fluxes exchanging through hands; sounds really political though ... anyway great thinker of a piece of lyrics
@ayehahmur Feb 2022
Loooove this. The backing is a wonderful platform for you to build up those amazing vocal stacks on. Really inventive approach to the one note melody, and it really really works.
@tunecat Feb 2022
Back again. Awesome to create a song that has the line about not dancing yet I can so imagine dancing . Any song lyric with deja vu in it must be pretty awesome. I like this version - a lot. I also like the other one. This is so understated and contains that emotion of sadness mixed with worthy mixed with resignation pain despondency along with the ‘middle finger’ ( which here might be the reverse v sign!! )
@srcoops Feb 2022
I believe that there are enough good people to overcome the evil ones. Your singing is quite good. Interesting song.
@richaaaay Feb 2022
Well done. Timely and timeless at the same time. Edgy, clever, honest, and catchy as heck.
@stephenwordsmith Feb 2022
The composition says All Saints, the lyrics say Dixie Chicks, the attitude says M.I.A. and I still don't believe any of them could have come up with something like this independently.
This is a song full of harsh, biting truths and open defiance, but it's mellifluous as anything - absolutely silky smooth, as slick as an oil spill in the Gulf of Alaska. Very catchy in all its pop skill, yet it holds nothing back. You're on to something here. Off to check out parts II and III now.
@andygetch Feb 2022
All kinds of earworms and HFS!!!!! I hope this gets to where you want it but even as-is OMFG!!!
@helenseviltwin Feb 2022
This is suberb! The only problem is that it talks about not dancing, and I can't not dance when the beat is this cool. I really thought you were going to go full on shouty, distorted guitars for the chorus and I had my hand on the volume control ready, but you raised the energy incredibly well without massively raising the volume. Love it.
@sapient Feb 2022
So good.
You should come over Europe on tour so we could could stand in the front row and sing along and then hang out with the band and it would be so cool... ;)
Really though, this is such a good song.
@amelea Feb 2022
So many good lyrics "And I heard a rumor that you're gonna ruin everything" and "Apocalyptic but it's still not over yet" and "And I'm still not having a good time"
This song is so cool!! Especially like the vocal melodies around this section "Tied behind your back so whatcha gonna do I got a creepy little feeling, call it deja vu"
@odilongreen Feb 2022
The opening beat-and-keyboard gives a nicely dramatic / ominous feel, and your oh-so-cool vocals do a great job of building and sustaining the atmosphere. A burning slow jam that's super intense!
@tiller2 Feb 2022
Great groove and overall craftsmanship. Nice change of pace between verse & chorus. I like the layered meanings of "party" and phrases such as "paralytic medicine" and "catching flies with poisoned honey."
@leepat Feb 2022
infectious! I'd say "party" qualifies this for W3 challenge too.
love the minimalist and laid-back fuck-you attitude - makes it all the more effective.
did I say the chorus is brilliant? it is.
@elesimo Feb 2022
Love the simple arrangement and your voice on top of it, it's so good! The vocals are amazing, and I love when you double them. Such a good song, it's solid!
@chroes Feb 2022
Mh, delicious electropunk! It has this roughness around the edges that I like about punk music. Fits the gorgeous lyrics very well. Your vocals are fantastic, especially in the chorus. Amazing work overall!
Also yeeeaaahhh to those feelz and lyrics!
@wylddandelyon Feb 2022
Oh, yeah, this certainly has an apocalyptic feel. Very nice.
@owl Feb 2022
Love the trip-hop feel of this and the biting lyrics! All the vocal parts are so well arranged. Great stuff.
@kahlo2013 Feb 2022
Love love love the music and your delivery is great! That chorus is awesome!
@kenmattsson Feb 2022
This is very good. Love the sound and you sound great. Cool writing.
@gm7 Feb 2022
Great loop with that head bobbin' toe tapping beat. I Always love your vocals..
@ductapeguy Feb 2022
That synth loop. So simple, so easy to add variations. So funky. All those layers of vox are sooo very trippy. And the chorus is profanely perfect and perfectly profane. Well done.
@crutherford Feb 2022
oh robyn this is fantastic.
great chorus.
great groove
the tasty harmonies.
that deja vu part!!!
fuck yeah!
@tippyteapot Feb 2022
Great song! Love the beat, the lyrics, the vocals
@ampersandman Feb 2022
This one is so good. I couldn’t help but admire how you create a song so infectious with such sparse means. Nothing but one loop, an added snare (plus the sound effect) for the uplift - and your gorgeous vocals carry the song home triumphantly. They’re honest and heartfelt and make your point so powerfully without ever having to be loud. So damn effective. Not one dull second in here, in fact I‘m on my third listen. Love love love it.
@eas3637 Feb 2022
Holy moly so catchy! Great beat, great riff, amazing harmonies - and super strong lyrics - you walk the line between angry and witty so well.
@cindyrella Feb 2022
You sure captured the subject perfectly! Well all burn and nobody will care. Love the great groove!
@sherrycanary Feb 2022
Robyn, this is masterful.
Love all the nuances of your voice
What a great riff played throughout the song .
Love the attitude and honesty of the lyrics.
@zeekle1998 Feb 2022
Nice groove and melody. You seem to make any situation sound amazing when you sing.
An awesome middle fingered display to The Man.
@antlion Feb 2022
Dig this! Thematically reminds me of Sufjan's recent song "Video Game". This has a great groove. I'm a sucker for that PA/megaphone vocal effect towards the end. For some reason I really want to hear this with huge grunge guitars on the chorus.
@mikeb Feb 2022
Not sure who this song is about, but you nailed it! Great sound, the vocals shoved back behind the continuing rhythm, then the harmonized chorus,
@popmythology Feb 2022
(PS: Because of some of the lyrics and the liner notes, I believe this fits the #collapsechallenge, even if that's not what you were intentionally going for. If it feels right for you, I invite you to add the tag!)
@popmythology Feb 2022
Ohhhhh, S**T!!!!!! I was literally laughing while listening, not because the song was funny but because I was so damn impressed and loved it so freaking much and couldn't contain my excitement (like, you know, *that* kinda laugh). I am totally downloading and keeping this forever. Also, this gave me a jolt of inspiration. I think the music, or maybe a sample of the music (minus the vocals but maybe using the chorus), would be AWESOME for a rap song. I swear, it would be so perfect. Would you be willing to send me an instrumental version of the track so I can experiment with trying to write some (probably very bad) rap lyrics to it as a potential collab?? Obviously, no worries at all if not! (It's increasingly looking like I won't have the time anyway, but boy I would sure love the possibility of maybe trying!)
@tunecat Feb 2022
Love it - the general vibe, the delivery and now I’m going on for a closer look at the words. Enjoying a lot!!
@valeriecox Feb 2022
Oh yeah, the politicians aren't gonna be happy until the whole world is completely beyond repair. The system is just broken. I'm generally not into political songs, but seeing as how this giant fuck you to the entire system, I'm totally on board. About the actual production, I like how you use layers and effects to differentiate the songs sections. Very effective. Really good work on the one note challenge. Plus that chorus is super catchy.
@johnstaples Feb 2022
Robyn, this is spectacular! I mean really, really brilliant! And to me it directly speaks to the sickness and stupidity in our country. And the monsters who take advantage of it.
So I love the overall vibe/groove a lot. It is perfect for this song. Your vocals are just awesome! You always impress me with your ability to match words and phrase up to the cadence of the beat so perfectly! This is absolutely top drawer performing! And your vox in this one is soft. But strong. Powerful even!
The lyrics are amazeballs too! You left the perfect amount of ambiguity to allow this to be interpreted personally by the listener in a way that they will be *sure* they know what it means! That is kinda genius right there!
The hook is excellent and welcome every time it comes back! The song has great dynamics and interesting variations throughout.
This song could sit right up there on the top of the Billboard list alongside the best shit Drake or Grande or Sia have ever done.
Did I mention I like it? A lot? :D
@jayjay Feb 2022
Clever words, catchy music and great vocals. Loving your work, feeling your words
@serene123 Feb 2022
Well I love it even if you don't.. it's incredible ! I've got it on repeat. The chorus is catchy as hell..
@jonmeta Feb 2022
This is good. I like the thoughtful way you use the percussion: the spareness of the verses lets the snare be enough to lift the chorus into another space. Excellent answer to the one note challenge. Everything around the single-note melody keeps it interesting. Doubling your voice is really effective. Since your said “Not sure its done”, I’ll add that tightening those vocals on the next go-round will bring it to another level. We’re all feeling angry and helpless and music is definitely a good place to spill it.
@emory Feb 2022
The beat is so menacing! I love the movement of the harmony vocal in the one-note chorus. I can already feel this getting stuck in my head (no complaints there!)
@aeye Feb 2022
When this started I almost expected you to start rapping because of the beat. The vocal treatments are so cool. Starts off on the left, then suddenly we've got both channels, with different harmonies. Also really wanted to note how you kept this changing and evolving by adding in an instrument here or there. It really just kept this interesting throughout. Awesome song writing and arranging.
