Feb 2022 guy-with-ukulele fuc love-song
I think this one is an appropriate write for Valentine's Day. I know it's February, but let's not forget those closest to us.
I tried to make this one sound like it was playing on a record - partly just for fun, and also partly because I thought the little bit of noise and randomness might smooth out the repetition a bit. Anyway, I'm closing the book on this one, at least for now. Hope you enjoy it.
I got twenty-five dollars to buy you a present
At the downtown discount store
My card is at the limit, everywhere I go
I try to punch in my pin, the machine says no
But I got twenty-five dollars to buy you a present
At the downtown discount store
I got seventeen dollars to buy you a present
At the downtown discount store
I was grabbing my keys when my stomach bunched
Nearly nothing in the fridge, so I stopped for lunch
So I got seventeen dollars to buy you a present
At the downtown discount store
I got five ninety-nine to buy you a present
At the downtown discount store
The warning light flashed when I started the car
Said if I didn't stop for gas, then I wouldn't get far
Now I got five ninety-nine to buy you a present
At the downtown discount store
I got twenty-five cents to buy you a present
At the downtown discount store
You called and said you're planning dinner, but the cheese is gone
And you're gonna make some pasta - could I get some parmesan?
I got a quarter to buy you a present
At the downtown discount store
I got no money to buy you a present
At the downtown discount store
I finally arrived with two bits to spare
But when I checked my pocket, all I found was one big tear
I got no money to buy you a present
At the downtown discount store
That's why I wrote this song for you
At the downtown discount store
They have some good deals, but there's nothing for free
So all I got to give you is a singing me
I wish I could give you more
But I got no money to buy you a present
At the downtown discount store
At the downtown discount store

great story!
if she won't take you for a song, she won't ever :)

Such a sweet song! I love the way you chuckle when you admit that you only have 25 cents remaining. Also, the chord change-up at the end of the "I wish I could give you more" line was delightful.

Great writing, and I love the continued repeated phrase, and I laughed every time the amount of money was lowered. Very visual, and wonderfully delivered!

Many would rather have a lovely song like this, and some cheese, than anything at the discount store. Very nice.

Nice. I like the lyrics, and the way they're brought to life is pleasant and appropriate. :)

Wonderful write: the countdown put a smile on my face. Perfect uke valentine.

Oh, I love this. That downtown discount store is a wonderful phrase to get to repeat over and over. And nothing like a count-down song with a list of excuses about how I really meant to get you something....And you wrote the song at the downtown discount store. Brilliant.
