This one kind of feels like an Eels tribute. I know, I know, another dark introspective song. Next one will be upbeat I promise!
Made a creative decision with the vocal distortion, could go either way on it.
The boy had a powerful mind
Though still only young in his years
He could rewrite the fabric of space from his dreams
Turn blue skys to thunder or rain to sun beams
If he dreamt of beauty The days were sweet
Long in the sun for the people he’d meet
The rivers flowed gentle the world was complete.
He saw smiles on the face of each person he’d meet
Dreaming Longer and deeper, stronger and sweeter, dream for us all night long
The boy grew in years and his power grew too
But the world did not greet him with love
Some felt threatened and sought to destroy what he had
And seething with jealousy treated him bad
Dreaming Longer and deeper, stronger and sweeter, dream for us all night long
Thunder rolls
The rain beats down
It’s cold
Frosty wind is blown
People shelter
From the storm
The crops and flowers, the sweet and the sour,
Plucked and devoured and torn
Dreaming Deeper and longer, and darker and stronger
Dream for us all night long
His sleep became troubled most every night
His dreams began tearing his soul
The world around him shook when he woke
And the days became black as coal
The bad days came frequently bringing destruction
His parents reached to a friend
Medicine man who collected their tears
And mixed up a cure for the boy that they feared
Dreaming Deeper and longer, and darker and stronger
Dream for us all night long
And he dreamed no more
Silent nights Silent days
And he dreamed no more
Silent nights Silent days
And he dreamed no more
Silent nights long and grey

Oh, I can hear the "E" stamp all over the vocals and arrangement. The "Toy Piano" tinkles in the Bridge were perfect.
I wish whoever is dreaming Covid and Putin would wake up!

Really cool melody on this one - I like the melodic choices you made. The soft far away vocals and bell like synth and of course the 3/4 time makes this feel like a lullaby. Your bridge is glorious! Love the chorus and that downward descent - excellent prosody. Your outro is really nice.

You’re not just shooting in the dark, you know what you’re doing here, and it is so satisfying to hear this. To follow along and notice the subtle changes that create the mood. #tit4tat

Wow! I am awed by your creative talents. I love the melancholy sentiment and insight that comes through in this well told story. So poignant and powerful. The chord progression and the bell tones work magically in this song.

I didn't expect distorted vocals working so well with the rhodes. What a great chord progression. It's been such a pleasure to listen to it.

I like that Rhodes-sounding keyboard part with its elegant chord movement. It's a delicate backing for the sad story, and I like the way you use the upper registers at points in the story that are haunting and pointed.

This song is stunningly beautiful. The lyrics are telling such a clear, solid story and the arrangement is perfection. The organ smooth organ compliments your distorted vocals perfectly. The deeper register of the vocals mixed with the higher register that comes in works to create something that feels quite magical!

Man, you've got the goods. That Swettenham way with words and creative composition and production. So impressed by the creativity of your music. So nicely done.

I'm meant to be going out for Valentine's day. But I read the words 'Eels tribute*' and had to listen. I sort of get what you mean, but I think it's all you too. The light distortion really suits you. Chord progression's really pretty (again). The chorus is particularly gorgeous (and quietly catchy). Woah... didn't see that middle bit coming, you went all medieval on us! And now I've digested the lyrics - wow, what a concept. What a brilliant brain you have. But so very dark too! That coda is beautiful and utterly heartbreaking at the same time. Well done dude! And now... I really am going out...
*We should totally geek about Eels some time...
