Feb 2022 folk fuc guy-with-ukulele acoustic-one-take children valentine
I was playing a few songs in the Kindergarten room during the dreaded indoor recess on Valentine's day. (The kids were a wee bit hyper). Their teachers were setting up their Valentine's party. I saw the preparations and started improvising this song in the style of Woody Guthrie. I was able to type the lyrics up and do a quick classroom one-take with my next first grade class listening in.

We have little paper bags with decorations
I wonder what’s inside my little bag
I wonder what’s inside my little bag
A cupcake or a llama, a card or pyjamas
I wonder what’s inside my little bag
Chorus
I hope Billy made a card for me
I hope Robin made a card for me
Red paper hearts, one or two or three
I hope YOU made a card for me
Chorus
I’m gonna make a valentine for Mommy
And another for Daddy too.
With X and Os, paper and glue
And on the front I’ll write I love you.

Adorable! I wouldn't be able to resist spreading the mono track across both sides, but I'm glad you kept it as-is. It makes it even more charming.

Thanks for your response to Plant a Tree which was so uplifting but it seems you write equally, if not better songs for kids yourself which are bound to keep them engaged, educated and entertained!

Admiration for your skills as entertainer, on-the-spot composer, child wrangler, and teacher. “I wonder what’s inside my little bag” is such a good line for taking the song to a place of childhood wonder. And yes, the Woody Guthrie comes through. I think of it as “the book of all-purpose WG tunes that lives in my head” and drawing on it always works great.
