Feb 2022 tom-waits_for_no_man orchestral harmonium weird waltz odd-time-signature
It's time for one of my occasional homages to Mr Tom Waits...
Oh, have you seen Colleen Macbride?
She didn't show for show for church today, the father is upset
Ma texted, but she hasn't replied
She likes to keep a routine, so it's not like she'd forget
The cop in the corner shop's sanguine
He's merely an amateur, trying his best
But there's nothing for him to examine
It's more than his faith that this case ought to test
This isn't somewhere you can run off and hide
I think my detective skills should be applied
And her brother's another idea
He told me there's lights in the sky here, sometimes
He said this with no sign of fear
This isn't a place that is known for its crimes
Now Colleen's not been seen for a week
Her family do not believe she'd walk away
Someone must know, but won't speak
The mystery still goes unsolved to this day

Had to click on the tom-waits_for_no_man tag when I saw it ;-)
These characters are at least that colorful, maybe more.
Some frankly amazing internal rhymes in this one. And whatever those stretched or delayed rhymes are called.
Appreciating the drum fill gestures around 3:00 that set up that little break. Skillful build, hardly any one place I can point to and say it's happening but it most certainly does.
Glad I found this one!

Delicious piece! Vocals, orchestral sound, the slow movements, so great. Especially enjoyed the way the lyrics explore this idea and slowly paint a detailed picture.

The gravel-voice with reverb-drenched music creates a very haunting song.

Well done story telling piece, this track oozes the imagery of an old noir film.

Lured in by the Tom Waits tag :). Love the sound here and the storytelling.

Fantastic mysterious film noir mood. The vocal melody is rather catchy but the accompaniment is somewhat disorienting creating a very unique feeling. Something Lynchian, perhaps. Very powerful.

This. This is just magnificent ! Your voice, the instrumental, the story. It's just wow !
@tseaver Feb 2022
Nice write! Great creepy vibe fits the story well, and the lovely growled vocals carries it along perfectly.

I liked this from the very start. Oh and I get to choose the outcome. Spot on mate, a bit different this is really good. A bit Cavish to my ear

Oh such a mysterious lyric and the delivery is spot on. Such wonderful orchestration. I am wondering how did I miss the past Tom Waits homages? I have channeled him a couple of times myself.
@panch Feb 2022
Very atmospheric and with your trademark big production it sounds haunting and more than a little sinister.
So Colleen is a cold case - will it be pulled out of the filing cabinet and re-investigated? I await with bated breath!

this has a real west end musical feel about it. lovely how it grows. i like the phrasing in this one. swings along and has a conversational flow. great vocals. i like the funereal feel too. nice work

There's a lot of character here. Love the sombre atmosphere.
