sat at the beach today, and memories flooded forth.

1 kit and kay invite me over
we live four houses apart
meet between hold hands and walk
down the middle of the road
make peanut butter sandwiches
with potato chips smashed inside
strawberry quick stirs up pretty pink
and we’re in heaven
2 down to the beach, mom says
wait thirty minutes before we can swim
underwater tea parties and handstands
and fingers getting pruny
then we pile the sleeping bags
hotdogs and s’mores
push the boat from the dock
and row out to the island
3 we get to stay overnight
our first independence i suppose
see who can stay awake the latest
drift off to curling waves and all the stars
morning wakened from the heat
of sun sparkle on water
stumble sleepy to waters edge
dive in to the dark
4 fling our stuff back in the boat
two of us swimming home
while the third one rows alongside
quietly back to shore
stagger home in a bliss of life
tell mom all about it
she smiles as i ask
if i can invite them to come over

@sheilerk thank you. There are so many more things I couldn’t pack into the song. But yes it was a great walk down childhood lane.

Mmmm. Strawberry Quick.Haven't even thought of that in so many years! And summer sleepovers with childhood friends What a lovely memory to share in this sweet, sweet song. I loved coming along with you, back into budding independence.
