I had packed up to go to play at the alehouse. everything was ready to go, but then the first two lines of this song came to me. I picked up a guitar, and more and more words started coming.I felt I better go with it, since I've been devoid of lyrics for ages. I wrote them down, and on the drive over, came up with some more, which I miraculously remembered. I finished it the next day. I've thought about this stuff for years, and suddenly it came out. Sadly, when it came to recording it, I had problems and I have lost faith in it. I don't think I'll try again. who wants to hear this stuff? I don't want to think about it. Terry Hardesty was probably not my worst school bully, but he was the last or near the last. I remember thinking it was kind of weird he was spending time on bullying when he was already starting to do his music. Most bullies in school had absolutely nothing going on, they bullied so they'd have something. Obviously in adult life bullies are adept at multitasking, people like Steve Jobs and Donald Trump could run companies and governments and still have time to bully. He kind of gets a prominent place in the song because he got a little bit famous. He worked for years in Merle Haggard's band, and they wrote a song, "Winds Of Change" together. Once between school and his stint with Haggard I went out to see him perform. He seemed happy to see me there, I don't know if he'd forgotten how he treated me. Quite possibly, I'm sure it meant a lot more to me than it did to him. Of course I didn't confront him - imagine, making somebody feel uncomfortable because they had treated you badly! That's Unamerican. I remember a few years ago (have heard nothing lately) there was a big campaign to stop bullying. I thought it was futile and hypocritical. How are you going to get children to treat each other well when bullies run the world? children aren't stupid or unobservant. They can see the US bullying people all over the planet , they see how society loves and respects bullies. Anyway, I wrote this song to celebrate our greatest national treasure, bullies. I hope you like it. I pretty much hate it. I feel betrayed by my muse, she fooled me into thinking I really had something this time. PS: You can check out some of Terry Lee Hardesty's music here: https://www.soundclick.com/artist/default.cfm?bandid=337652. Gotta love the piety
Terry Lee Hardesty
Was my bully for a while
For little guys like me
It was just the style
They'd attach to you
Like a barnacle to a rock
They'd spot you from miles away
A rabbit to their hawk
Chorus
Let's hear it for the bullies
As they're running the world down
I wonder what they'll do for fun
When we're no longer around
It seems to me the winds of change
Aren't blowing hard enough
To clear the air of my despair
From all their toxic stuff
There were more, most came before
The first was Kelly Roe
He pee'd on me in the boy's bathroom
To him it was just a joke
Time went by, they'd move away
New ones would take their place
Like being in a prison,
I was owned and in disgrace
Chorus
Bridge:
they must have had real bad lives
To make them be so cruel
But at the time, it never crossed my mind,
I just hated to go to school,
And live another day
To be humiliated that way,
they say it's out of fashion
To be a bully now
But I look at the world around me
And I just don't see how
If this was true you wouldn't have
them running everything
Like Companies and Universities,
They're the presidents and kings
Chorus
Coda
So let's hear it for the bullies
Let's give em all a hand
Let's hear it for the bullies
they think they're just grand
Let's hear it for the bullies
though I'm really not a fan
There're always be more bullies
To kick our faces full of sand
Let's hear it for the bullies (4x)
