I often end up writing lyrics that are meant to kind of give myself a kick in the tail. For this one, I took a cue from Song 1's imagined advice from my mother and decided to leave some advice for my kids.
I often tell them that effort is a skill and although they seem to be able to take constructive feedback from everyone else they always push back when I try to give them advice whether it's music or sports or homework, whatever. So this is a kind of plea to give it their all and take the benefit of my experience and maybe someday when I'm gone they'll eventually thank me for it. Doesn't sound very rock n roll to say it out loud but that was the inspiration and the connection to the concept.
P.S. That's my daughter in the photo. She hates my feedback.
Every Sunny Someday
(c) Bennett Grassano 2022
Hold out alll doubt
Keep me in your minds eye
In order to be
A future must be seen
Long before the reach of light
All I want you to be
Is all you can be
And if it’s what you want anyway
Give it to em every time
Like it might be the last
Give it to em every time
Like it’s never again
You can do what you want to
However you want to
You don’t have to listen to me
Do what you need to be free
But be free of mistakes
I’ve already made
Slow down
Sun down
Brilliant as a summer’s day
Inevitably
In perfect harmony
Every string will resonate
All I want you to be
Is better than me
And since it’s what you are anyway
Give it to em every time
Like it might be the last
Give it to em every time
Like it’s never again
You can do what you want to
However you want to
You don’t have to listen to me
But if you listen to me
You’ll be so much
better than I’ve ever been
And every sunny someday
you’ll be at your best.

That bossa feel is compelling in the verses. and the progession dropping off is fun.
Again, grain of salt, it just seems like everything is compressed and standing in a line left to right in front of me including the quite disjointed kick and snare. All in a straight equal volume regimented line so it's hard to know which to pay attention to and the vocal is swinging out there with a strong melody trying to persuade "the line up" to come with it. enhance it, support it, frame it, but they never really do, they just keep following the sheetmusic and playing their thing. i'm overwhelmed and wondering what unmistakable idea (the usp) I'm meant to take away, and then come back again to happily re-experience. Again, I'm thinking it might be a complete difference in styles between us... but I'm telling you from the hip as I'm hearing it. In headphones, by the way. #Tit4tat
Ima stop for now. Might be my mood, might be my ears are shot from mixing all day, I might be going much further than you want in the wrong direction, I might be focusing on how "I would do it" and not helping any. Drop me a quick line and let me know how you'd like me to go on so that it will be of real use to you. I'll get back after, or go crawl back under my rock. :) Love ya, my friend. I want it to be useful.

What a great sound! Your recording and mixing on this really stands out. Now about the music...I like how it is a rock song, but is also very understated so that the vocals and words come through. Very meaningful words for sure--I also have younger kids (9 and 3 1/2) and the teaching never stops. Hopefully they have your love for music and ability to create it!! Another very good song.

these are my favorite lines. i like how the melody works. reminds me of elvis costello.
You can do what you want to
However you want to
You don’t have to listen to me

Modern day Desiderata, of the soul and the heart. I like the music , elevates the emotions. Lucky you, dad.

This really resonated with me man - put me right back in our various home school lock down periods. At times it got so frustrating when the kids wouldn’t listen and you’re sitting there thinking I’M JUST TRYING TO HELP YOU BE THE BEST VERSION OF YOU!! I love the music too, you sound like Cat Stevens at points here, lovely stuff!

Wow my oh my I’m really loving the chorus, both the progressions and the modulating unexpected chord shifts that finish it.
And then the theme — living in the tricky space between advising with care and dad-splaining. At least that’s what comes to mind when I hear the words, maybe because I’ve not succeeded doing a song around a similar theme about advice from my dad. You really struck a chord (or a few, heh) with this number!

But be free of mistakes I’ve already made…I can so relate to this passage and this song. Some lovely guitar playing. I’m feeling like I’m watching a story unfold. Learning more and more about you and your inner workings.

This is purely sensational. I love the whole feel of the song and the emotive chord progressions really sync in with my musical brain. and then boom the chorus is a classic ready to stick in the heard for good. Wow i look forward to getting stuck into more of your tunes matey

Magical song, a pleasure to listen to. Very cool advice! Beautiful singing, playing and photo.

I absolutely love the Spanish-style guitar playing. The lyrics are inspiring. Your vocals sound like pleasant indie pop. What a cutie in the photo! Kids don't miss a beat--it's important for parents to follow their heart and dreams so they have the courage to do the same one day! Enjoyed my listen.

What a nice idea to give advice in a song. I understand why this song isn't rock n roll. Your acoustic pop side is great. Your guitar skills!!!
@jayjay Feb 2022
Really nice lyrics. Great advice for everyone, not just the kids. Love the guitar work especially the Spanish guitar sounding parts.
