As soon as I saw the prompt, I knew the story I was going to tell. It's a true story from my student days back in the mid 70s. I'll say no more, listen to the song!
PS Instrument used is an 8 String Baritone Ukulele
(C) Who said Valentines never work?
I can (G) tell you that they can
I (D) used one once as part of a plan
To be(C)come her (D) fancy (G) man!
(G) I thought she was cute so I sent her a Valen(C)tine
From your (A) secret admirer it read
MHQ it was (D) signed
I (G) put it into her common room pigeon (C) hole
At that (A) time of day when you never bump into a (D) soul
She had a (G) party that night at her student (C) flat
A (A) couple of drinks and we got to chewing the (D) fat
I (G) told her that year I had not got a Valen(C)tine
And she (A) opened her purse and said: "Take a look at (D) mine!"
CHORUS
"MH(G)Q" I asked. Who on earth is (C) that?
"Male Head (A) Quarters" I guessed
with a grin like the Cheshire (D) cat
"Has (G) anyone said they fancied me?" she then (C)asked
She was (A) keen for this mystery admirer to be un(D) masked
I re(G) plied that dozens desired to be her (C) beau
But (A) that particular guy I did not (D) know
But at (G) last I put her out of her mise(C)ry
And said (A) actually MHQ, well that would be (D) me!
CHORUS
You see (G) MHQ was the penname I used at the (C) time
When (A)writing to papers, that's the way I would (D) sign
She (G) laughed and I proved it, by re-writing the (C) card
Then (A)went for a kiss now I saw that she was off (D) guard
(G) Now our liaison had crossed that bridge (C) head
It (A) wasn't too long till we were both sharing a (D) bed
But (G) sadly, that incident didn't often reo(C)ccur
For her (A) parents said "I was much too common for (D) her!"
CHORUS

Nice performance! I like your vocal line and guitar playing!

This sounds like it should be sung in a noisy pub somewhere. Crowds like a good story. Who know, you might get lucky.

I was on the edge of my seat with every line! I made myself not look ahead in the song so that I could enjoy the story as it unfolded. Great story telling and delivery! Sorry it didn't work out!

if you are common, then common is a glorious thing

Nothing like a secret admirer. There's an innocence about this I like.
Great sounding tune.

Ha! This is great story telling and a wonderful memory of a loving liaison! I was hoping for a different ending! Splendid vocals.

I love the back story to this. The song itself is a brilliant tale of love won and lost (am assuming this is case based on the last two lines??). I also love the term "fancy man".

Aww, I love this fun love song! I kept wondering if there was a sad ending coming and so delighted with how it ended!!! Thoroughly enjoyed my listen and it gave me a smile!
@cindyrella Feb 2022
Well isn't this special? No, really how great and sure made me smile!
@sheilerk Feb 2022
Well, that was fun! What a great story! I loved every bit of it. I really like the lines about putting it in her pigeon hole when you wouldn’t see a soul. It just really tickled me thinking about that little excursion into sneakiness.
