Written and recorded in about 50 minutes for the skirmish prompt 'Valentine'. As ever, getting it off the 4-track takes a while, although I've been slightly quicker this time.
For some reason, I recorded some boiling pans when cooking this evening as I thought it sounded like heavy rain and I decided to give myself the extra hurdle of including it (looped) as a sound bed and mentioning it in the lyrics. You can hear the gas cooker in the fade-out. That sounds less rain-like.
The song is short, but I'm reasonably pleased with the words, other than the 'singing blue cat' bit; it rhymed and scanned and I ran out of time to think of something better.
Singing is a bit off in places, and the guitar outro was just messing - 'skirmish' rules apply..!
I don't remember if I was your valentine, or if roles were reversed and you were mine. I've forgotten much of the last few years, brain fog and brain freeze; it's all disappeared.
A present each year is given. it's a fact. It's a garbled old habit, a singing blue cat. The nature of love must be smoother than this, it remains to be seen if this memory persists. And the heavens are open, it continues to rain, the water is cleansing my addled old brain.
It seems to me to be perfectly true; if we're happy and content, then my valentine, is you

The rain/pots sound is great. It gives the while thing a cozy, domestic feel. The guitar is lovely, and actually the singing blue cat adds a certain surreal interest to the lyrics! Nice job, very impressive skirmishing!

Very pretty little song. I quite like the boiling pots, which do sound like torrential rain. The simplicity of the guitar accompaniment sets off the gentle, wistful vocals.

Oh my lord that simply beautiful guitar has really grabbed me. I totally love how you've created the atmosphere here. Totally beautiful lyrics set to a perfect musical background and your stove is like it sounded outside here in Bakewell all day yesterday. Perfect ode to love

The singing blue cat deserves his own song too.
Really great. Loved the sound effects.
@jwhanberry Feb 2022
Sweet sentiment presented in a free rhythmic style. It works. I would like a bit louder vocal but that could just be my ancient, beat up ears. Good skirmish.

Oh wow I guess it's safer to record your stove which sounds like rain than record the rain outside. Unless you have a shitty microphone, in which case it doesn't matter I guess if it gets wet. Anyhoo, this is great, I love the guitar, and I like the way your lyrics just seem to come out just in a flow instead of predictable lines, I should try that. I like the garbled old habit, a singing blue cat.

Ah the fading memories a bittersweet condition
Nice melodic accompaniment
An ode to love
Nicely done

Love the lullabyesk guitar melody. This is quite impressive for only 50 minutes from start to finish.

I can really relate to the first paragraph with the last 2 years just flowing and blending in a foggy haze. I love the rain sound and I like the tempo change after the words, when it picks up and feels like a different phase in the story.

coincidentally I'm also giving a singing blue cat this year
@kahlo2013 Feb 2022
I really like the poetry of these lyrics and the spoken delivery works very well over the music track and environmental sounds. Love that last line.
@musicsongwriter Feb 2022
Very interesting take on the promt, a story and music full of imaginary. Cool idea for the rain imitation.

Oh that Singing Blue Cat line has got to stay!! It has an element of mystery and randomness. Really liked the feel to this and the boiling pots added that nice running water feel, extra points for experimenting, I'd never of thought of that in a million years.
@johnstaples Feb 2022
This is really sweet! Those boiling pans do a fine job of sounding like rain and really add to the feeling of the song! Your guitar is quite sweet and your vocals a treat! The lyrics are really special with this "the heavens are open, it continues to rain, the water is cleansing my addled old brain" being a favorite for me! And I gotta say I kinda loved that "singing blue cat" section! It kinda adds a spark and a bit of color! Really nice work on this skirmish!

The rain may be cleansing your brain, but the feeling I get from this is that there is a storm coming in this relationship. Too much is taken for granted in this coupling, rather than lived spontaneously. Great images and development.
@whispermouse Feb 2022
I definitely heard rain until I read the notes! Nice write, some great images here.
@arthurrossi Feb 2022
A lovely song with skilfully crafted lyrics that make the listener think... Awesome vocal delivery and I also like the rain-effect that you added in the background...
@majormajormajormajor Feb 2022
Such uncertainty! And the darkness introduced with the concept that maybe what really connected these two has been eroded with the aging of one's brain. Really good stuff. I was convinced the singing blue cat was a reference I didn't know. Such a funny placeholder!
@nateger Feb 2022
Love the backstory of boiling pans. Very convincing rain! Great playing - the sparse playing and your quiet voice paint a vivid picture.

This has a terrific "poetic" feel to it; it's ethereal and floating but still melodic and accessible, with the vocals gently working into the listener's soul over the simple but lovely guitar. Just a great song for a bit of introspection on Valentines Day.
