Feb 2022 acoustic singer-songwriter folk americana alt-country country
I upped my demo game with this one and actually set up a microphone instead of just recording a voice memo on my phone.
I had an uncle who died as a child after getting blood poisoning while swimming in a nearby creek. I've always wanted to write a song about it, but I've always felt I was telling rather than showing.
I'm taking another run at this subject with the point of view of the frustration when a senseless tragedy occurs. The world can seem like a terrible place sometimes, yet we all have to get up an live our lives.
Sadness abounds
In this small town
There's grief for a boy
With his knees in the creek
In innocent water
Swimming at nightfall
Under clouds full of rain
And the echo of a pheasant's call
No one knows
The answers we seek
Does everything in this world
Prey on the weak?
Or can we find
Some hope to unfurl
What am I supposed to do
In this mean world
Why does the water call
To the mind of a child
So many things go wrong
So many things go wild
But there is hope
In the oats
And a song
In the corn
Light that was lost at night
Comes back with the sunrise
No one knows
The answers we seek
Does everything in this world
Prey on the meek?
Or can we find
Some hope to unfurl
What am I supposed to do
In this mean world

Very touching song about your uncle's sad demise. Well played and sung! It is an honest song about a "mean world". We are quite fortunate to have arrived at the apex of nature. Nice work here!
