Feb 2022 folk girl-with-guitar ambient-outro guitars percussion
This thing started by tuning my Takamine to one of my favorite tunings (DADGBD). I went back to a chord progression that I recorded last year, never making it into a song. Recorded it again. In my mind the riff called for some kind of ritual drums. So for the first time ever, at least when it comes to actual songwriting, I grabbed my shaman drum and then things got crazy. I had some „talking shakers“ lying around which became my hats. Oh, and also I beat up our leather sofa and a plastic bag with Gavin Harrison signature drumsticks.
The dreamy outro is something I‘m really proud of. I used my Fender Mexico Strat (the one on my profile pic) and my boyfriends Fathom Reverb for this part. I’m really a sucker for outros in general and it reminds me of so many songs that I like.
When I started writing the lyrics I had a pilgrimage in my mind. Someone walking long distances to seek the truth and conquer their fears, their fear of death especially. I recently googled for hiking trails here in Germany as I‘d really like to try walking long distances this year, so that’s probably where the inspiration came from.
I’m crossing over
This river
River of tears
I’m digging deeper
Into
My greatest fears
Oh I will shine
Oh freedom is mine
Oh I will strive
Oh, defeat the demise
I’m getting closer
To Zion
Salvation‘s near
Oh I will shine
Oh in gardens of light
Oh I will survive
Oh until the end of time

Wow that's quite a journey.
Love the shamanic rythm and the tense guitar strumming combined.
The outro make you feel lighter and lighter until that final resolution chord. Made me picture a dream where I would be runing with longer pace every step and at the end finally taking off and flying.

The song is just gorgeous, and your arrangement demonstrates the lack of need for formal percussion! (I'm an appalling percussionist, my worst deficiency, and I'v had to force myself. Rice-loaded salt shakers and spare bits of wood dowel come in very handy). And this is really two songs, isn't it, though they relate. The ambient outro would stand on its own. Soooo impressed.
I should say something about the lyrics too. Most people refuse to face their fears. There's no way out other than facing them, and walking through them. And then, one will survive, perhaps even beyond the end of time. You've put it simply, clearly, and elegantly.

This is hypnotic. The strumming pattern together with the percussive elements and the vocals all work together to set such an all consuming mood….Then for the cherry on top…the outro is super cool with a vibe all its own…Well done with this!

I listening on headphones just after midnight. This is perfect music for this time of day. Love the pace of the vocals and the deep reverb on the background vocals.
@musicsongwriter Mar 2022
Beautiful song, very strong and hypnotic, with epic feel to it. Your singing and playing are superb.
@guatecoop Mar 2022
I love that percussion that starts right off setting the pace. I also really enjoyed the slower pace of the vocals with the super reverby backing vocals. You were really patient with this and gave lots of space, which I always find to be a challenge. You have a keeper of a song with a dark but hopeful message. Very well done!

This is stunning and grabbed me from the first beat. Love all the organic percussion and oh that synth/vox at about 1:10 conjures the mystic. This is a magical track!. I'm happy to come across your work!
See you for 50/90?
@keithcuts Feb 2022

A delightful listen

... unexpected outro ... keep on wandering.. away
@feb21sundari Feb 2022
wow, Awesome text and your voice is wonderful. The accompanying instruments are very intense and driving
@adforperu Feb 2022
Ooh, this is so compelling - that rhythm, the background vocals starting each line, creates a real sense of drama. Maybe it's because the percussion sounds like horse hooves, but I'm getting a real western vibe! The instrumental part with the low-key guitar solo, is such a great reflective moment, too.
@tunecat Feb 2022
The drums are really mesmeric. Soundscape is calming like the chord change for chorus snd the bvs and the fact it changes on repeat
@wrenarcher Feb 2022
How did I miss this from earlier in my feed?
This is wonderful. I absolutely love your voice and the ambient background vocals are gorgeous.
Your liner notes give a wonderful context to what the lyrics are about and I love how it's analogous of a trek... a pilgrimage.
Whoa! just as I finished typing the above sentence the outro happened.
Swoooon!
@cblack Feb 2022
Wow, this is nice. That simple guitar strum and the faster drums couple with the moodiness of your vocals so well! Definite vibe here.
@standup Feb 2022
I like the progression, and the smooth low-pitched vocals. The vocalist has quite a presence here. I like the idea of finding freedom in our eventual fate.
I like the change to the outro, and there's a gap, which makes it seem like there's a big separation -- two movements to this piece.
I like the reverb atmosphere to that section. And I like the ending, taking about 30 seconds to fade out.
@chroes Feb 2022
That percussion is everything! As a sucker for all things minor the song is totally my jam. Your soft voice, the repetitiveness of the patterns are hypnotic and enthralling. The ending at 3:40 is haunting and wonderful. I loved everything about this.
@judypie Feb 2022
Oh I love it, however you’re making that click clack rhythm is fantastic! And the backing oooohs, beautiful. Ahhh and the dreamy outtro, that’s gorgeous! I especially love the Zion first. Awesome you’re gonna do some hiking! I would love to do some German hikes!!
@gorban Feb 2022
This is a masterpiece. All the playing, the singing, the soft background vocals but mostly the hypnotic atmosphere of the different rhythm parts. The outro is very moody as well. Two thumbs up!
@dzdandcunfsd Feb 2022
Wow, this really is an atmospheric mood. Some great couch/etc drums! and that is a fantastic outro/intro to the next piece ;)
Great lyrics too, though I didn't catch a word of them... not that they aren't clear I just wasn't paying attention to the words being said, as usual for my listening habits.
I was in Maine and had planned on hiking the Appalacian trail south in the spring of 2020, but well... I probably don't need to explain any farther :D
I'll get to it someday... maybe.
@nadine Feb 2022
What a great atmosphere you created. Reminds me a lot of the music of the Witcher series. Now you can call yourself a sofa drummer. This song has something meditative. I enjoyed the outro. Could be the ending of an album don't you think?
