Rough draft, skirmish writing for sure but I had fun with this one.
The Dirt Hill
Opening my eyes I remember
There’s no school today
The warm morning sun through my window
Invites me to play
I head downstairs, eat breakfast
Then back up to my room
throw on jeans and a t-shirt
Pull on socks and lace up my shoes
I put away my clean laundry
Make my bed and brush my teeth
Then I’m out of the house
On the sidewalk on my way to get Keith
As I walk I whistle and sway
The warm morning sun on my skin
Invites me to play
Keith’s comes to the door
says, “hi” then asks “Wanna play Mario?”
I follow him inside greet his mother
Then say, "Oh not right now, no”
Today we adventure
This is not a drill
Today my friend we hike
to the top of the dirt hill
Keith was excited
I could see it in his eyes
“first”, I said, “We must prepare.
We need to gather supplies”
We wandered room to room
Searching for survival gear
The warm sun through the window told me
Afternoon was drawing near
A pocket knife, a walkie talkie
a toy compass and a bag of snacks
A piece of rope and some nunchucks
We threw it all in a backpack
Today we adventure
This is not a drill
Today my friend we hike
to the top of the dirt hill
We walked out past the houses
To the end of the street
Through the concrete basements of new construction
Saw dust sticking to our feet
We walked through sharp grass and sagebrush
Through the forest of scrub oak
With each step we gained altitude
And ascended that sandy slope
We finally reached the summit
Oh what a lovely view
We could see for miles and miles
From the top of the dirt hill
We found a place to rest
After our journey so hard
When out of the corner of my eye I saw a trampoline
and realized we were in someone else’s backyard
We had to hurry
There was no time to eat our snacks
We threw our half eaten granola bars
Into the backpack
We ran down the sandy slope
Through the forest of scrub oak
Through the sagebrush and sharp grass
And the concrete basements
To the end of our street
Then back to Keith’s house
Today we adventured
It wasn’t a drill
Today my friend we hiked
to the top of the dirt hill
