Skirmish prompt- Childhood memories
This song is not fully formed...Put together within the hour for challenge- I nearly decided to wait and not upload now..It is very personal. But I am letting go.
I miss you Mom
I've wanted to tell your story for so long
I couldn't find the right words
And where to begin your journey
I didn't know then
I had to grow up first
You told me of your childhood
How you lost your Mama first
you were 5 and 6 years later your Papa died
I miss you Mom
You married so young
4 Children before turning 31
And a husband who never did understand you
The morning I woke to find Grandma cooking in our kitchen
I had slept right through the sirens in the night
I was 4 years old and she told me that you'd be alright
You had some kind of stroke and needed care
You must have had an extra reserve of strength
That would carry us all through the years
Dad would leave- but you stayed and raised us
I am amazed at my mothers resilience
I held you in my arms the night you died
All your children and grandchildren
grown and by your side
Saying goodbye with your tender request
"Take care of each other- I love you all"
I miss you Mom
I miss you Mom
I miss you Mom
I miss you Mom

This is beautiful, Laurie! So touching, so sweet. I tried holding back tears but the line "Take care of each other- I love you all" did it. Thank you for sharing your mom's story, her love, and the love for her.

Oh, this is so moving. I am weeping here. This is exactly the sort of song I was hoping would emerge from my prompt. I am so proud to have been the midwife on this one.
If you do "polish it up" please let me know.
BTW - I think you might need to make it clear that "Grandma" is your mother. I was confused at first, but then realised this must be the case as you continue using the second person singular that you have used throughout to address your mum. Those unfamiliar with the delights of English grammar may not get that. ;-)

Touching song. Memories you paint are very vivid. Very emotional portrayal. Very good songwriting.

What beautiful, personal and that poignant lyrics these are... Our lives are all but fairy tales, but love is the only thing that really remains... In fact, it is all about love, love is the only thing worth living (and dying) for... Thank you so much for this gorgeous and so deeply heartfelt song that you created here and shared with us... It is wonderful...
