Clean Slate – February 8, 2022
Tell me, please, you want to come back home
To see your mother, it's been too long
You know the number or just send a postcard
To let us know that you're fine
I never should have said what I said
To put those ideas in your head
Fight or flight? You always picked the latter
I'd take it back if I could
We kept your room just as it was
Except we tidy-ed up and vacuumed the rug
The bed is made and we erased your whiteboard
A clean slate for when you come home
We wait for our prodigal son to come home
We wait. We hold our breath.
And we wait.
Please son, won't you come back home
Your mother's worried and it's been too long

Like the 2nd verse. Can feel the pain in the father’s words. Simple sweet melody as always.

Oh I love how you recorded this one! The guitar is bright but subtle, and your vocals are ringing out in just the right way. Lovely balance also. I can feel the longing and fragile love in this song - the delicate dance one takes with grown children. Really nicely done. #tit4tat

I appreciate the break to the last Outro lines... adding dramatic effect to the waiting process... #tit4tat

What a sad song. The story is very clearly told, and I love the image of offering a clean slate. Nicely done. #tit4tat

Love the tone of your voice. Plaintive, heartfelt and poignant here. Lovely fingerpicking. Simple but brilliant storytelling. #tit4tat
@celineellis Mar 2022
oh i can hear the desperation in your vocal - it really sells this story and feeling bringing me into the song and story. really nice guitar work underpinning the lyric/vocal. another perfect example of how things dont have to be over complicated to be brilliant #tit4tat

This seems so real. I love the subtle pretty guitar. So clean and crystal -line. Beautiful heartfelt vocal. Great performance of a very touching song.
@tan482 Feb 2022
This is so heartfelt and beautifully performed. I really feel for these parents - hope he comes home soon :-)
@bethdesombre Feb 2022
I love the gentle way you ease into the implicit story here, sticking with the narrator rather than stepping outside to explain. The fight or flight line is well done. And the clean slate (though maybe you it should have been a chalkboard instead?) metaphor/image is great!
@kadmad202 Feb 2022
Oh Dan, this is absolutely beautiful - sincere, raw, and as others have said, heartbreaking. Your spare delivery suits the lyrics perfectly. The high capo on the guitar makes it almost sound like a uke, and has a lovely lilting quality. Really wonderful.
@kenmattsson Feb 2022
Aching is the word that comes up hearing this. You can feel the regret in the parent's voice. The extended strums with the waiting are very effective. Great job.
@max Feb 2022
Sigh....... heartbreaking.
You feel the pain and the inability to communicate.
Love the performance.

This is a one take? Sound so charming and heartfelt. I would go home if I heard that song on the radio haha! I like the overall vibe.
Btw: I just noticed that your lyrics doesn rhythme and it doesn't bother me, because this is great storytelling.
