skirmish prompt: childhood memories
Here is what came to mind… I really had no idea that I was more interested in relationships with women until after college but somehow boyfriends did not last as long as girl friends I was “in a phase” with …
Being Me
V1
we were eight
she was Barbie
I was lifeguard Ken
I rescued her at the beach
gave her mouth to mouth
rubbed her soft shoulders
then swam holding her close
in our pretend sea
V2
we were ten
she was Rachel
I was Christopher
counselors at 4-H summer camp
we caressed in the woods
I felt her almost breasts
kissed her under bright stars
at our pretend camp
C
we were pretending
playing our roles
in scripts of my
wildest fantasies
they were acting
but now I know
I was simply being me
V3
we were twelve
she was Jenny
I was Oliver
we fell fast deeply in love
we practiced endless kissing
then I made her my wife
I cried when she died
in our pretend film
V4
we were nineteen
she was Maggie
I was a college guy
we fell drunk in a twin bed
we learned to make sweet love
years later we graduated
from our pretend life
C
we were pretending
playing our roles
in scripts of my
wildest fantasies
they were acting
but now I know
I was simply being me

Like @colgoo said, this is great queer storytelling, so relatable!

Like one of those “summers” films! In fast forward this is very good!

Well told coming of age and understanding. It's really tightly written. Using the same pattern for each story is an effective device. Fine skirmishing.

Bitter sweet life long love story well told. I love the chorus and the lines 'they were acting...but i was simply being me' . Says so much about how our play acting as kids can shape what we become.

Deep ideas here from the simplicity of child's toys, and cool concept to examine them in contrast to the adult life they intend to teach children about.

Cool chronological song style!
Each step detailed and vivid
Awesome

Excellently written lyrics, you tell someone´s story and at the same time, different stories... I like the variation of the words that follow "pretend". Also, lovely, elegant lines with a great rhythm. I also love the deep philosophical meaning of the lines "they were acting
but now I know
I was simply being me". This is a wonderful write!

This is very nice, a lot of striking vivid imagery. Could be a poem as well as a song (I mean doesn't even need the crutch of music like some lyrics do).

Ah yes, the quest to find the real you, it is what childhood was all about. What a pity society (especially back then) put our behaviours into straightjackets and told us what we should be rather than allowing us to emerge from our cocoon as who we really are. Oh well, we survived the indoctrination, I guess, didn't we?

A great story. I love how you progress in time here.
Unfortunately, I don't think I could perform this and make it believable. :-)

Great journey through childhood dating . Great storytelling. Funny how we go through these phases. Very relatable.

Excellent storytelling with solid imagery. Hits home for many of us. Great work!

Wow!!!! I love this. Great queer storytelling. And, oof, I feel this so much! It’s interesting how sometimes masks help us to live our truths more freely. Another great write!
