First, I forgot to use my pop filter so, sorry for the splosives! And the mix is really rough!
Everything in this song is true! I loved the prompt because it gave me a few moments to reminisce about a wonderful part of my childhood!

a white haired dog
a black one too
one named Fido
and Fido two
a Laddie boy
and Heidi girl
enriched my childhood world
apple pie and blackberries
enthralled by Merrie Melodies
the best toys took no batteries
my childhood memories
lightning bugs
bullfrogs green
a turtle
who ate beans
guinea hens
and guinea pigs
idyllic childhood scene
apple pie and blackberries
enthralled by Merrie Melodies
the best toys took no batteries
my childhood memories
summer was in Forestville
on grandpa's family farm
grandma loved me dearly
kept me safe and warm
grandpa taught integrity
honesty and truth
the best place in the world
to spend my youth
apple pie and blackberries
enthralled by Merrie Melodies
the best toys took no batteries
my childhood memories

Oh, this is beautiful. I was already crying at that first verse with the list of dog names. I like how you leave so much space around these images...And then that more elaborate verse about the grandparents. Great work.

I just love nostalgic songs and this doesn't disappoint. Blackberries/melodies/batteries/memories, love how all these words work together. All the details are so sweet, but my favorite verse is the last, I wasn't super close to my grandparents but my kids are close with my parents and I hope/think they'll have similar memories to hold on to. Really enjoyed this!

John, this is so charming and pretty. Your banjo playing! So good. You weave the tale of your youth so beautifully, and I am glad for you that you had these memories.

You are a great story teller...I get captivated by the lyrics and that tasty guitar and banjo picking'...Like a John Prine song. Winner! My fav by you this FAWM.

So many of your memories mesh with mine. It was my Great Aunties place for summer, and I lived in the wrong place for fireflies, but we got to chase grasshoppers with butterfly-like wings. I loved this song. Your voice and banjo were golden. It plucked some heartstrings along with your banjo strings.

WOW!!! I LOVE this tune!!! First the choice of instruments and how intertwined they are!! I didn't hear any pops, but I heard an amazing vocal delivering some of the best lyrics I've ever heard!! You reached back into my childhood, reminding me those days when I experienced those exact things...merrie melodies....blackberries, frogs and dogs,...on and on. First I'm shocked you remember all that so well and second that you wove all that into these lyrics so sweetly. As was said, you do indeed have a high standard, but for me at least, this is one of your best writes. (up there with Cabbage White and Christmas at Grampa's)

Nicely done John. I'm right back there with apple pies and guinea hens. You surely painted a fine picture of your memories. Good work.
@misterdemp Feb 2022
What an ideal combination of words, voice, guitar sound for these lyrics. Great skirmish and song. the words rhyming in the chorus with memories is a cool effect for me.
@truetone Feb 2022
I agree with @pattie, your voice sounds great on this!
@pattie Feb 2022
OH my gosh I love your style! What a great voice!!! When you sang "one named Fido, and Fido two" made me giggle - so cute - I've had 3 cats with the same name so I relate! Did your turtle really eat beans? OMG LOL! The music is beautiful and again I love your voice! Great chorus - toys with no batteries - so true - they were the best!
@mardeycranbleson Feb 2022
Love the instrumentation on this! Lot of great imagery with enough stuff for everyone to find something to relate to.
@arthurrossi Feb 2022
You conjure up so beautiful pictures in your words...Wonderful imagery and the "blackberries-melodies-batteries-memories"-(near)rhymes are delicious! and oh... yeah... "grandma loved me dearly/kept me safe and warm" - I still miss my beloved grandma so much... The banjo and the melody are gorgeous...

This is lovely John. Marvellous evocation of your childhood. Sounds idyllic indeed. That Chorus is a killer, it put a huge lump in my throat.
This has a real John Prine feel about it and that is true praise in my book.
Glad that I played midwife to this one, you should be a proud Dad :)

Yeh, I like the relatable lyrics. Very homely thoughts. Batteries and memories make great lines. Well done. Has a real authentic sound.
@colgoo Feb 2022
Love the banjo! Gives this a real country feel: bare feet, overalls, and banjo picking on a wide front porch.
@coolparadiso Feb 2022
I like these real reminisces, they have a different feel to them. Your standards are pretty high, this is pretty darned good. Love the banjo!
