I got teamed up with @geoff61 for a random colloboration - I picked this one from his existing lyrics as I liked the theme of it.
At first I tried to go for a Civil War era theme with harmonica, but I just couldn't get it to work. Then I tried another one of @geoff61 's songs with another chord progression and couldn't get that to work. I then bought those chords back to this song, and it ended up sounding a bit more like a 60's protest song. I worked on this with my wife (who is also singing on this!).
Be warned -we did this as a one take wonder as don't have much time this weekend so it is a bit of a rough recording - we did this live and I thought 'this is going really well' until I messed up the end verse and ended up laughing but I've left it in,,
I actually think there's a decent song in here waiting to get out, but it obviously needs editing/chopping and changing. Perhaps I will do another version at some point!
Thanks @geoff61 for the lyrics, hope you like it.
THE WAR IS COMING (MY OH MY) (by @geoff61)
CHORUS
The war is coming my oh my.
I pray that it will pass us by.
But every rain becomes a flood
Every river’s wash with blood.
Every mountain top will spy
The war is coming my oh my.
VERSE
Fathers kiss their children
Mothers wipe their eyes
For the war is coming
No point in asking why.
A never ending circle
Of pride and jealousy
Pervasive are the wicked
How cruel the irony.
CHORUS
The war is coming my oh my.
I pray that it will pass us by.
But every rain becomes a flood
Every river’s wash with blood.
Every mountain top will spy
The war is coming my oh my.
VERSE
Sons take up your rifles
Daughters do the same
For the war is coming
To murder and to maim
Don’t matter if you’re pious
Don’t matter if you’re brave
You’ll never dodge the bullet
That puts you in your grave
MIDDLE
Ain’t no point running
There’s no place to hide
Across the wide prairie
They bridge the divide.
The rich and the lonely
The cold and the lame
The strong and the meek ones
All caught up the same.
The disease of the mighty
Will trample the weak.
The war it is coming.
There’s no time to weep.
There’s no place to sleep
There’s no food to eat.
END CHORUS
The war is coming my oh my.
There is no point in asking why.
When every rain becomes a flood
Every river’s wash with blood.
Every mountain top will spy
The war is coming….. my oh my.

Head started bobbing 3 second in. That downbeat is as easy as it is heavy and it works GREAT for this genre. Your lyrics and your performance really embody the best characteristics of this style of folk song. Nicely done!

Working now. Love this more now after listening to the tune. Beautiful performance! Reminds me of the 60s. Fantastic overall!! Kudos!!!

Phew! So heavy and on point! Wonderfully structured. Crazy times are upon us. And uncertainty causes anxiety. You prorated us for what is to come as if you've been there before. The music player sadly isn't working on my phone right now to hear this so will come back and listen. Fantastic write!!

I'm a big fan of songs about war and really enjoyed listening to this.
The lyrics are great and I think the 60s protest song style works well - reminded me of Bob Dylan.
These lyrical lines really stood out for me:
'Don’t matter if you’re pious
Don’t matter if you’re brave
You’ll never dodge the bullet
That puts you in your grave'
