I've been mulling this song over since my baby was born last year, sort of muttering it and making it up as I go as a lullaby. Becoming a parent was a big part of my coming out and starting my transition. Traditionally, parenting has such a gendered component to it, it's been interesting to explore what that means when you're not quite a dad or a mom. There's a lot of feelings, mostly good ones, but some envy and regret too. This is just a sweet little song about them.
If I were a mountain
I'd be steep and I'd be wide
I'd hold you everloving
Always on my leeward side
And I keep the winter winds without
And hold the summer in
Oh if I were a mountain I'd love you
If I were an ocean
I'd be deep as deep could go
And in my purest waters
There'd be room for you to grow
And you could swim in me for miles
And never once come up for air
Oh if I were an ocean I'd love you
If I were an orchard
I'd be bountiful and green
And nestled in my branches
Would life, full and serene
And you'd never want for nothing
Beneath the shelter of my boughs
Oh if I were an orchard I'd love you
If I were a mother
I'd be gentle as July
I'd comfort every bad dream
And soothe you when you cry
And when I hold you to my breast
You'd know exactly you were home
Oh if I were a mother I'd love you

Sweet, simple and touching. And such an encouraging insight from your mulling: love pours through regardless, whatever the vessel, using whatever's to hand.

Lovely write! Captures the parent's wish for her child beautifully: a perfect lullaby.
