Pete: I gave up the chance to go to a mummy exhibition to make this today. I saw Anya had been asking if anyone had music that needed lyrics so instead of writing my own I chose to be a lazy sod and reach out to her instead, knowing that she would do a far better job, and in super quick time she had written and recorded a set! It was mega efficient collaborating and for that I thank her. I love the story in the lyrics and in spite of the sentiment it does feel somewhat cinematic to me. I hope to add some backing vocals at some point, and mix adjustments will be necessary but I wanted to get it posted asap. I'll probably update the mix and repost in a few days when I've had a chance to listen on various systems.
Anya: it's about an old workmate who was the first person at work I really connected with. She was always on something but she told hilarious anecdotes. Also, she worked at the pub across the road on her (two hour) lunch break which is kind of heroic to me. Dunno if she actually went down on girls but she had that kind of free sexuality. But yeah, she left abruptly and I've not heard of her since—and as such I kind of think of her as a kind of Sheffield Holly Golightly.
you came into my life
like a tragic painting
a work the critics thought
was maybe missing something
and so it went on
the guys that you blew
the girls that you’ve seen
all is connected in the rollup ring
hanging onto every word
holly green
there’s no good way
to leave this town,
so hold up—you’re not in the movies, now
you’re not hepburn
and I’m no stray
more of a television play
the girls you went down on
to town on mdma
holly please tell me all about your day
when i’m grown i want to be holly green
[spoken]
and then one day
she just left
without a word
and i asked after her at the beer engine
where she worked lunchtimes
she’d left two weeks pay behind the bar
there’s no good way to leave this town
seems like i’m not in the movies now
i’m not hepburn
and you’re no stray soul
trapped in television roles

This has such a great lyric - familiar theme with a very unique take and attitude that makes it stand out from others …. Fabulous groove and awesome vocals on this. I love how it it moves.

Really love the vocal melodies especially at "there's no good way to leave this town..." What a terrific character, she comes to life for me. The spoken bit adds yet another bit of cinema to this picture.
Others are making awesome comments about the musical arrangement and playing and I agree with all that too. Wonderful collab.
@judypie Feb 2022
Wow, what a sound you’ve created! It’s absolutely delectable. Tip top peeps!
@rayboneor Feb 2022
There's so much going on, and yet fits with precision: the kinetic drums, tasty guitars, and, well, all of it. It's a straight-up shot of summertime happiness. Lovely vocal as always. That last verse is a perfect touch of bitter to go with the sweet
@sailingmagpie Feb 2022
The jangly guitars are so dreamy and work really well with the dusty drum loop. Top notch lyrics. Love the film/TV juxtaposition and the catchy melodies. Cracking work from the pair of you.
@karlsburg25 Feb 2022
my first thursday morning listen and what a treat. The whole music gave me a sense of upbeat joy and anya's lyrics and vocals really take it to another level. I love the background synth inbetween thechorus and verse. Defo 90s feel here. Its oh so smooth and effortless. Well done both of you
@owl Feb 2022
Somehow I missed this one earlier! Great character study, and I love the breezy, jangly sound. Lovely collab, I really enjoyed it!
@w1n Feb 2022
Really grandiose production, like the combo of the 90's vibe of the drumloops with the crisp acoustic guitars. And the vocals are super, such a good collab.
@miltz Feb 2022
Very nice. Makes me think of 120 Minutes (maybe that was just a US thing?), early 90s. I really like the guitar on the chorus.
@mistermann Feb 2022
Positive comparisons to the Raveonettes and the Cure are merited here. This is lusciously layered and Anya’s vocals skate across the top effortlessly delivering this Portrait of a Woman Off-Celluloid. Nice collab, you two.
@spikedirection Feb 2022
This is a hefty slice of pop perfection! I'm a sucker for catchy guitar melodies and spoken word middle sections. I'd really like to play this during the fawm section of my show on XRPRadio if I have your permission?
@lcad Feb 2022
Beautiful stuff! Love the motif line, it's a great character piece and says so much about expectations and reality. The brightness of the melody is such a contrast to the lyric, feels like a classic 80s jam. Awesome stuff!
@adforperu Feb 2022
Oh my god, that chorus! Absolutely glorious. The whole song is great, but the chorus is just so perfect. Just a great indie-pop gem all round, one of the best songs I've heard this FAWM
@itneverhappened Feb 2022
Sounds like it' s straight out of a forgotten Sarah Records mastertape from 1991. Which is great! Makes me think of people jumping around on sunny, open fields in my imaginary music video. Great collab!
@susyblue Feb 2022
Such nostalgic jangly happiness here with a touch o bittersweet. Also such top-notch production and performance here, and story-telling, perfect! Beautiful collab
@shortdan Feb 2022
Ah, I really like this one. I love the lyrics - the absolute highlight for me. Anya’s vocal works brilliantly with the trademark bl jangly guitar work too. Really nice.
@thedutchwidows Feb 2022
This is brilliant - the lyrical story and vocal delivery completely suit the music. Has a feel of peak-Dubstar - story telling from tiny details with sublime, perfectly-crafted music. This should be a film.
@nadine Feb 2022
I want the 90s back! I can imagine this person very well. Great instrumentation!
@frenchcricket Feb 2022
[oops commented in the wrong place soz]
@thelowestbitter Feb 2022
Mystified by this two hour lunch break (the dream!). This is a wonderful collab, love it all but especially the spoken work bit. That chorus is super catchy and blosty's guitar work is great as always. Ace
@nicetrip Feb 2022
Sounds so good, I like it!
@erucaesounds Feb 2022
This is epic.... love the synth intro and the finger picking guitar rhythm..... well crafted and put together.... perfectly at ease with itself..... vocals and instrumentation both really outstanding! Nice work!
@vomvorton Feb 2022
Ah this is lovely! Textbook BL sparkle throughout and the lyric is a perfect fit, so fully of intriguing detail and feeling. Particularly loved the way the music swells after the first chorus, and the spoken word - A+ collab, will listen again.
@paulh1237 Feb 2022
Great opening line, and the detail in the lyrics throughout is very "show don't tell". The music is fittingly cinematic, and the acoustic guitar sounds really bright and generally Ace.
@jackdawfactories Feb 2022
I love all of this, huge 90s britgirlbritpop vibes and I ADORE that. That chorus is GORGEOUS. An incredible collab from you both.
@frey Feb 2022
I was so immersed in this, omg. I wanna watch whatever movie this song would be the soundtrack of, the storytelling is immaculate, that spoken word bridge is EVERYTHING
